Environmental Manager in Mali

PURPOSE OF ROLE:

The incumbent is accountable for planning; directing and co-ordinating sound environmental management at SEMOS S.A. Sadiola & Yatela S.A mines to ensure the mines complies with legal requirements and AngloGold Ashanti policies and standards.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Post-graduate environmental qualification (preferably Masters Degree).
  • Professionally qualified and registered with a recognized professional body/institute.
  • Minimum of 10 years post qualification technical work exposure in the mining industry.

JOB KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of Environmental Geology, Environmental Science and Mining Engineering.
  • Knowledge of chemical, tailings and waste management.
  • Knowledge of international best practice in mine environmental management and environmental dynamics of land, water and air systems.
  • Knowledge and implementation of relevant safety standards (e.g. ISO 14001).
  • Knowledge of local environmental legislation.
  • Knowledge of mine closure cost estimation and planning for closure.
  • Computer literacy, at least MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, Power Point etc.)

ACCOUNTABILITIES AND AUTHORITIES OF THE ROLE:

This incumbent would be accountable for the following:

  • Establishing and implementing environmental processes in conformance with corporate and company standards, as well as national legislation and other requirements for sustained regulatory compliance.
  • Identifying major environmental risks or aspects for the two mines and prescribe programmes to manage them through environmental monitoring and data interpretation.
  • Meeting the organisation's environmental policy objectives through continuous environmental risk assessments, audits and mitigation.
  • Minimizing the organisation's closure liabilities by developing and periodically reviewing proactive rehabilitation and closure plans as well as the associated liability estimates for the mine.
  • Managing environmental staff, including overseeing training and development programmes, and to implement the company's localization strategy.
  • Minimizing the organisation's environmental exposure and to ensure effective environmental performance by developing, implementing and evaluating a sound environmental management system, compliant with ISO 14001 requirements.
  • Preventing reoccurrence of dangerous events through timely reporting and investigation of environmental incidents and non-conformances, followed by the implementation of corrective actions.
  • Achieving high overall environmental performance by enhancing environmental awareness among the organisation's staff at all levels as well as those of contractors through ongoing education and continuously establishing active participation of employees, contractors and stakeholders in the proper care of the environment.
  • Preserving the organisation's image through timely provision of information and advice on potentially damaging environmental issues and practices to top management.
  • Conserving financial resources through effective cost management of environmental activities and projects for the promotion of sustainable development.
