The Foreign Policy Program is accepting applications for a Senior Fellow in Japan Studies in the Center for Northeast Asian Policy Studies (CNAPS). The primary responsibility of the Senior Fellow will be to conduct original research on Japan-related policy issues and conceive and lead an expanded program on Japan-related policy issues.

The Senior Fellow’s interests and research should include a broad range of issues in U.S.-Japan relations. This can include, but is not limited to, the need to ensure prosperity, welfare, and security for all of Japan’s citizens as its society matures; the task of defining Japan’s role in the world (both in terms of hard power and soft power), even as it works to meet the domestic needs described above; and the opportunity to adapt the U.S.-Japan alliance to the international environment of the 21st century, particularly regarding non-traditional security issues. The Senior Fellow will publish research in policy-related monographs and/or book projects as well as shorter items, conduct public and private meetings and discussions, and interact with the media. In collaboration with the CNAPS Director, the individual will also be expected to assist in the facilitation of the CNAPS Visiting Fellows program and events series with respect to Japan.

The successful candidate will hold an advanced degree (Ph.D. preferred) in political science, history, political economy, or a related discipline, and will have either considerable (10+ years) government experience working on issues related to Japan, or a proven record of book publication and publication in professional or academic journals and newspapers. The individual must have a proven ability to conduct original policy research and analysis in professional English, and to disseminate it to consumers with the objective of impact on public policy; and must be able to competently lead and undertake both research projects and issue-focused meetings, conferences, and other events with little supervision. Professional experience and or residence in Japan, as well as language skills, are preferred.

The Senior Fellow must be motivated yet flexible, diplomatic, creative, trustworthy, and a good team player, and must be able to work in a fast-paced environment. Strong candidates should have extensive contacts among the higher levels of the government, academic, and business communities in Japan, and must be comfortable working with high-ranking decision makers, senior government and diplomatic officials, current and potential funders, and Brookings senior management.

Salary will depend on the candidate’s qualifications and experience.
