Summary

Microsoft has an immediate opportunity for an experienced attorney to join our Middle East Africa (MEA) Legal and Corporate Affairs (LCA) team as a highly qualified and experienced attorney to help manage the company’s anti-piracy program in the West East Central Africa and Indian Ocean Islands (WECA) region. Microsoft’s business in the WECA region is growing quickly. This role is intended to further deepen our anti-piracy engagement in a selection of priority countries.

The role, which will report to LCA’s lead attorney for Anti-Piracy in MEA, will involve direct responsibility for delivering results from several country programs in the region, is an opportunity to work with a diverse set of business colleagues and help deliver real business growth.

The position will be based in Johannesburg, Nairobi or Nigeria.
The attorney will work as part of the MEA LCA team that includes government affairs professionals, attorneys, investigators and administrators. MEA encompasses 75 nations and is headquartered in Istanbul, Turkey.

The successful candidate will have a law degree. He/she will have 6 or more years of relevant experience as an IP attorney and will preferably have cross jurisdictional experience, ideally in the IT industry. Experience dealing with diverse cultures is a plus. Fluency (written and spoken) in English.

Position Profile

Position: Corporate Attorney, Anti-Piracy, WECA
Location: Johannesburg, Nairobi or Lagos

Key Areas of Responsibility:

Developing the AP strategy for WECA in coordination with the different local business teams.
Working closely with key regional and local business executives on anti-piracy related issues.
Supporting the company’s IP policy strategies.
Supporting the distribution and use of licensed software in the WECA region through strong and targeted anti-piracy enforcement and education.
Handling or supervising anti-piracy cases, criminal & civil investigations, litigation matters, and working with law enforcement agencies and investigators.
Overseeing Microsoft’s policy and government outreach work on anti-piracy related issues, working with broad array of public sector officials in the WECA region.
Acting as a public spokesperson for Microsoft on anti-piracy issues.
Collaborating with colleagues in other parts of the worldwide anti-piracy legal team.
Managing a budget.

Candidate Profile

Key Experiences

Significant experience in the legal department of an international company (or similar experience in a law firm).
Experience managing and implementing corporate compliance initiatives.
Significant familiarity with intellectual property laws and concepts.
Experience handling intellectual property infringement cases and related criminal and civil litigation, and in working with law enforcement and customs officials is desirable.
A strong understanding of business issues and thinking, preferably in the IT sector.
Strong analytical, negotiation and drafting skills.
Experience dealing with diverse cultures and managing and building strong client relationships.
Excellent team player with the ability to work and communicate with a large number of diverse people, including senior management, in a high-pressured business environment, with a flexible, open, collaborative and results-oriented attitude.
A record of professional growth and success.


Qualifications

Six years or more relevant professional activity.
Law degree.
Excellent written and spoken English. French would be a plus.
