The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease.
The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute (WTSI) is a world leader in genomic research and has played a major role in sequencing the human genome and characterising patterns of human sequence variation.
Applications are invited for a senior statistical geneticist to join the Genetic Epidemiology group at WTSI. The group has a strong focus on research in sub-Saharan Africa, including population-based studies of chronic diseases. The successful candidate will be expected to design and implement analysis pipelines to carry out population genetics and association analyses of rare and common genetic variants (SNPs, sequence variants and CNVs) in population cohorts across sub-Saharan Africa. The post holder will develop and maintain research databases for genomic sequencing and epidemiological studies, and will be required to interact with WTSI teams, as well as international research groups, and support the work of group members. There are excellent opportunities to lead on major research projects and scientific reports.
Applicants will have a postgraduate degree (masters/PhD) in statistics, genetics, bioinformatics, computational biology or a related discipline, and comprehensive knowledge of relevant algorithms and software tools. Demonstrated programming skills in Perl, Python and/or C/C++ are required. The post-holder will also need relevant experience in the application of statistical methods to the analysis of genetic data. It is essential that the candidate has clear communication skills with the ability to present methodologies and results succinctly, the ability to work within a team, and to provide advice, training and support for researchers.
Ideal Skills
Applicable knowledge of specific technical products (E.g. PLINK, EMMAX, GATK, SAMtools, Imputev2, SHAPEIT) would also be an advantage, as would experience in working with whole-genome/exome sequence data and familiarity with database development and website development for biological data.
Benefits
The Institute has excellent purpose built facilities on the Genome Campus, Hinxton on the outskirts of Cambridge. We offer a comprehensive range of benefits including a final salary pension scheme and excellent on-site facilities. Further details can be found on our website https://jobs.sanger.ac.uk,
