The mission of a data operating centre is to provide customers with uninterrupted service, implement projects and services within specified deadlines as well as operate and maintain sophisticated high-tech equipment at the lowest possible cost. Part of the IFNM mandate is to support the data operating centres by ensuring all building, equipment and related appurtenances are available and at acceptable levels of uptime whilst providing engineering, preventative maintenance and project implementation expertise and advice.. The Mechanical Engineer is a representative of the IFNM team in the field of HVAC and data center cooling distribution as well as related building management systems.
SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS
- Develops feasibility studies regarding projects in mechanical engineering with specific emphasis on cooling based solutions for data centres, office complexes as well as building management systems employed to monitor and control environmental alarms.
- Prepares budgets and develops CER’s, technical designs and specifications deliverables to ensure high percentage of up-time and/or preserving network reliability.
- Participates in the planning and implementation of projects involving cooling and related distribution from point to point within an operating centre, while working closely with customers, project sponsors and Network Engineering.
- Develops detailed engineering, installation instructions and commissioning tests as required.
- Negotiates technical issues with suppliers regarding the acquisition of equipment and/or systems or other related matters, in accordance with established criteria concerning quality, cost and deadlines.
- Provides support to various groups regarding mechanical, HVAC and cooling equipment, building management systems and their related distribution and system reliability.
- Coordinates the work of teams assigned to various projects and follows-up on these projects until successfully completed.
- Identifies, develops and implements preventive maintenance programs and measures for ensuring safe and continuous operation.
- Identifies, develops and implements corrective measures for dealing with equipment and service problems.
- Reviews, modifies and/or justifies operating centre equipment support (AMC) contracts involving various suppliers.
- Recommends cost reduction/savings opportunities where appropriate and applicable.
- Performs project leader duties when applicable.
Desired Skills & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent years of related experience.
- Relevant experience in the design and implementation of cooling systems and controls in a telecommunications data center is considered an asset.
- General knowledge in aspects of equipment and systems associated with HVAC and data center cooling demands including but not limited to Chillers, CRAC units, free cooling technologies, BMS interfaces and related distribution in a telecom environment.
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Visio and MS Office software.
- Working knowledge of spoken and written English and French
