Position status: Permanent Fixed Duration Contract (3-year contract, with option to renew for another 3, maximum 6 years), Full-time (37.5 hours/wk)
Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Salary: $84,545 per year
 
POSITION OBJECTIVE:
 
The Deputy Director (DD) partners with the ED in the development and implementation of the vision, strategies, policies, and processes that govern MSF-Canada’s work. The DD deputises for the ED towards the Canada Office and Board during the ED’s absence, including assuming hierarchical responsibility for MT members.
 
The DD will play a strong role in supporting the internal management and when required, represent MSF Canada and its positioning on selected external platforms and advocacy issues.  The DD will also support ED in strengthening intersectional partnerships and collaborations.
 
DD works closely with the Internal HR Officer to ensure that staff management aligns with MSF Canada’s employment philosophy. The DD also oversees activities involving the association and the office and is responsible for identifying and recommending opportunities to improve this collaboration.
 
DUTIES AND REPONSIBILITIES:
 
General Management
·         Drives internal office operations and decision-making ensuring overall effectiveness and consistency with organizational principles, values, and policies as well as ethical, environmental, and other general considerations
·         Leads the successful implementation/completion of specifically identified office-wide programs and projects
·         Acts as an integral member of the Critical Incident Management Team (CIRT)
·         Develops and leads the strategic and annual planning processes and associated reporting processes; ensures that the Board and the ED’s vision and strategy form the basis of all departmental planning
·         Orchestratesoffice connection with intersectional information including through returning expats and international colleagues, to ensure operational issues and debates are brought to MSF-Canada in a systematic manner
·         Guides the internal human resources strategy and directs the internal human resources officer in the delivery of effective service across all office departments
·         Promotes by example the maintenance of a positive work environment that encourages engagement with MSF Canada’s vision and values
·         Oversees the collaboration between the office and associative activities
 
MSF Canada Operations and Representation
·         Provides support and expertise to the lobbying and fundraising efforts of MSF-Canada through direct engagement and representation at events, conferences, and meetings
·         Collaborates and advises on the development of policy and advocacy choices and activities
·         Participates in thought leadership activities that highlight MSF’s profile and position in home society
·         In collaboration with the ED, represents MSF Canada at international forums and participates in fostering partnerships with international sections
·         Undertakes project visits/gap fill positions to keep abreast of the reality of MSF’s work and support our field operations as needed
 
Contribution to the Movement
·         Identifies and monitors selective reactive dossiers from a Canadian perspective, e.g. refugee health, etc, and shares information and updates through relevant forums
·         Contributes to humanitarian discussions within MSF through the development and implementation of specific dossiers and projects, ensuring collaboration with relevant parts of the MSF movement
·         Establishes a network of contacts within academic institutions, parliamentary bodies, NGOs, and other forums to facilitate discourse and reflection on key issues affecting operations and humanitarian actors, particularly as they relate to specific dossiers
 
QUALIFICATIONS AND JOB REQUIREMENTS
 
Education and Experience Required:
·         Undergraduate Degree at minimum required, with Graduate studies in topics related to MSF’s work and context highly valued
·         Senior NGO leadership experience essential (5+ years), with proven ability to inspire, motivate, and manage people; exposure to highly political environments, humanitarian crises and emergency contexts very desirable
 
Skills and Values Required:
·         Genuine interest in and commitment to the humanitarian principles of MSF
·          Excellent prioritisation and time-management skills with the ability to deliver in a dynamic environment with multiple competing deadlines
·         Strong interpersonal and relationship management skills with proven success in cultivating and maintaining networks with a broad and diverse set of stakeholders
·         Demonstrated ability to balance analysis, reflection, judgement, and poise when acting as a spokesperson for the organization
·         Talented communicator with excellent presentation and assertive negotiation skills
·         Presence and maturity to respond effectively to sensitive/confidential enquiries and complaints
·         Fluency in written and spoken English is essential; fluency in written and spoken French an asset
·         Strong Data management and analysis skills and literacy in MS Office
·         Direct experience with budgetary control and financial planning is highly desired
·         Ability and willingness to travel internationally including to MSF missions and projects, sometimes in unstable contexts
 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
 
·         Work is generally carried out during the day, Monday to Friday but sometimes it is necessary to work evenings, weekends or holidays
·         Duties require long hours sitting in front of a computer screen
·         Domestic Travel: 25% and International travel: 10-15%
