INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME Young Foundation

Young Foundation internships offer a real chance for people to get a taste of working in social innovation – research, ventures and applied innovation. Our internship programme is designed to provide interns with the skills they need to work within the social innovation sector and go onto find work in this area.
We encourage people of all ages, experiences and backgrounds to apply for our internship programme. If you think you have something to contribute to our work, please do not hesitate to apply.
Please see below for details. You can also find out about where our current interns come from, or check theFrequently Asked Questions.
The Internship experience at the Young Foundation
Interns work alongside our dedicated team of staff at our offices in Bethnal Green on a number of organisational and administrative activities, from desk-based research to events organisation.
Interns attend major staff meetings and brainstorming sessions and are encouraged to attend lunchtime seminars, and events. We introduce interns to all aspects of our work and ensure that their input forms a relevant and valuable contribution to our on-going projects. Interns have co-authored reports, written blog posts and helped to present our work – we try to ensure that interns have an active part in the Young Foundation’s work.
We arrange regular social events for interns to meet Young Foundation staff and get to know each other. A training programme is provided for interns covering: Excel; project management; research and advisory skills; facilitation; business model canvas; filming; external affairs and social media; and a CV workshop.
We work across a wide range of policy areas, from youth leadership, practical learning and youth justice to community regeneration, health and wellbeing, and with a wide range of organisations using a comprehensive set of tools and approaches.

The Young Foundation does not sponsor overseas applicants.
What are the roles?
Applied Innovation
The Applied Innovation work at the Young Foundation spans sectors, organisation types and themes. Working across the public sector, local and central government, communities and voluntary organisations, we support and advise people in a very hands-on way. Projects we have completed include helping local authorities learn how to innovate and prototype services to improve older people’s well-being, pilots for web services for local neighbourhoods and workshops to help people re-design services. Members of our team have backgrounds in local government, community organising, architecture, service design and healthcare.
The interns we are interested in are those who want to find out how change can really happen in organisations of different kinds – both the big, formal ones (like the NHS or local councils) or more informal ones – like neighbourhood groups.
External Affairs
The External Affairs team at the Young Foundation oversees and coordinates our communications and development work. This includes high level events, interaction with the media, updating and curating our website, launching publications and fundraising and development.
International
The Young Foundation has always been involved in work outside the UK. We recognise that the more we know about the best solutions globally, the better we will be able to achieve results. And experience suggests that some of our own ideas will work best in other parts of the world.
Today our international work mainly focuses on developing and spreading skills in social innovation. Specifically our work includes orchestrating networks, advising governments internationally, influencing policy and launching global ventures that promote social innovation. In recent years we have helped to run events in China, Spain, Portugal, the USA, Singapore, Australia – and we work with dozens of like-minded organisations across the world.
Research
High quality research has always been at the heart of work of the Young Foundation. Our team specialises in a range of research techniques ranging ethnography to statistical analysis.
We conduct research and action research on contemporary life and changing needs, on issues as diverse as teenage pregnancy and isolated older people, from night working to civility. We work at every level of society, from improving community relations in local neighbourhoods to sharing international best practices in the field of social innovation. All our research is underpinned by our belief that insights arise from understanding what is really happening in people’s lives. It is then our responsibility to ensure that these voices are communicated honestly, clearly and in a way that is accessible to all.

Ventures
The Young Foundation Ventures Team develops promising ideas into new social ventures through providing social capital, business support and entrepreneurial expertise. We seek out people and organisations with potential to achieve high social impact through a new, innovative, scalable and sustainable venture-this could be via a business, social enterprise, non-profit or public institution.
