Scientist P3 International Agency for Research on Cancer

International Agency for Research on Cancer -Cancer Information (CIN) Section

The Cancer Information (CIN) Section at IARC is responsible for the collection, estimation, dissemination and interpretation of the key indicators that describe the cancer burden at the global, regional and national level.
In order to achieve this objective, CIN Section works closely with and provides support to cancer registries around the world and, in particular, seeks to advocate and capacity-build population-based cancer registration in low- and medium-income countries (LMIC). The IARC-led multi-agency Global Initiative for Cancer Registry Development in Low and Middle Income Countries (GICR) was launched in 2011 to establish effective mechanisms to expand the coverage and quality of data from population-based cancer registries (PBCR) in LMIC and attain a global fund for such activities. Now in its operational phase, a series of IARC Regional Hubs for Cancer Registration are being rolled out in Africa, Asia and Latin America and the Caribbean. Coordinated by IARC in collaboration with designated local Principal Investigators in each Hub, the objective of the Regional Hubs is to provide the necessary support, training, research capacity and advocacy tools to assist in a sustainable expansion of high-quality PBCR within defined Hub regions. An IARC Regional Hub for Cancer Registration has been operational in Mumbai, India since late-2011 and covers Southern, Central and Eastern Asia. In collaboration with the International Network for Cancer Treatment and Research, an African Cancer Registry Network (AFCRN) is developing into a regional Hub covering sub-Saharan Africa. Agreements have been reached to launch a Hub in Izmir, Turkey to cover Western Asia and Northern Africa by early-2013, while discussions are on-going regarding a Hub initiative to assist registration in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Reporting to the Deputy Head within the CIN Section, the successful candidate will liaise and collaborate with cancer registries and the local Principal Investigators of the IARC Regional Hubs for Cancer Registration to provide the necessary support, training, advocacy and research to registries within the defined hub regions.
