Job Title: Director of the Civil Society Academy of Welthungerhilfe Asia
Location: New Delhi, India
Term: 1.5 years
Annual package: INR17 Lakhs (USD28,000)
Background and Context
Welthungerhilfe’s vision is a world in which all people have an opportunity to exercise their right to a self-determined life in dignity and justice, free of hunger and poverty. In this context, civil society contributes to human rights and poverty alleviation in terms of sustainable development. Welthungerhilfe aims to assist partner organisations in reaching their goals through more professional and substantial contributions, and to promote their capacities for the long term. In 9 of 11 cooperation countries in Asia, Welthungerhilfe works exclusively with partner organizations. Together with those partners, Welthungerhilfe can access a critical potential that can be used to contribute to combat hunger and poverty - through a diversity of approaches, including humanitarian aid, community development, rights-based approaches and advocacy. In order to tap into those potentials, we need to develop critical capacities within Welthungerhilfe and its partner organisations. Specific emphasis will be placed on:
- Participatory local governance and rights-based approaches
- Situational and policy analysis on the right to food and nutrition, including agriculture policies and systems, the right to water, land rights, the right to employment and the right to education
- Management of civil society organizations, leadership functions and organizational development
The main target groups of the Civil Society Academy are more than 50 partner organizations of Welthungerhilfe in Asia (to start with), networks they are involved in affiliated organisations and up to 500 Welthungerhilfe and partner staff (to participate in trainings, conferences and exchange visits).
The team of the Civil Society Academy will initially only consist of the director as well as an administrative support staff. All thematic inputs as well as trainings will be conducted by external training institute, consultants and staff of Welthungerhilfe in Bonn as well as overseas. The Director reports to the Board of the Civil Society Academy, which, so far, comprises four members from different units of Welthungerhilfe in Asia and Germany.
Key Objectives of the Position
1. Building up and managing an innovative and effective support centre for Welthungerhilfe in Asia with a focus on civil society building and rights based approaches.
2. Helping establish a knowledge network of partner organisations of Welthungerhilfe, other civil society institutions and networks as well as external training institutes and consultants.
Tasks
· Setting up the civil society academy as a registered for-profit entity in India
· Identifying and utilizing capacities within Welthungerhilfe
· Leading the development of modules in collaboration with external institutions, consultants, partners and staff of Welthungerhilfe
· Taking a lead in organizing the capacity building events and conferences
· Following up with trainees
· Developing an online platform for communicating with different units of Welthungerhilfe as well as partner organisations with regard to trainings, feedback,creating a network of partners etc. (taking into account the varying degrees of technical capacities of the different countries)
· Reporting at least twice a year to the board of the civil society academy
· Engaging in regular intervals with the board on management-related issues
· Engaging with all Welthungerhilfe Units in Asia and Bonn with regard to the training needs and their perception of the Civil Society Academy
· Identifying further funding sources for the Civil Society Academy in collaboration with Welthungerhilfe and develop corresponding proposals
· Overseeing the logistics, finance and administration of the academy
· Representing the academy as part of the Welthungerhilfe network
· The position will require extensive travelling in Asia
Requirements
· Master or PHD in studies with relevance to the objectives of the civil society academy, preferably social studies
· Minimum of 8 years working experience in the development sector with at least 5 years in a senior position of a training institution with a focus on civil society and development
· Experiences as a trainer/professor for participatory courses in poverty reduction, project cycle management
· Excellent intercultural competencies
· Excellent networking and communication skills
· Fluency in English and excellent writing skills
· Good computer skills
· International experience is an advantage
Terms and Salary
The position is initially for 1.5 years. The annual salary is in the range of INR17 Lakhs (USD28,000). The remuneration is based on Welthungerhilfe’s salary scale for Indian national staff. However, all nationalities are eligible to apply, in so far as they meet the listed requirements.
