Accounting Manager


Room to Read seeks to transform the lives of millions of children in developing countries by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education. Working in collaboration with local communities, partner organizations and governments, we develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children, and support girls to complete secondary school with the relevant life skills to succeed in school and beyond.
We are non-governmental, non-religious and work with many local NGOs and community based organizations to implement our programs. We currently work in Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Laos, Nepal, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Vietnam, and Zambia – countries with a desperate lack of resources to educate their children. Since our inception, Room to Read’s worldwide team has impacted over 7 million children by constructing more than 1,600 schools, establishing over 15,000 libraries, publishing 800 new children’s book titles in 11 local languages, and rewarding over 20,000 girls with long-term, holistic scholarships.
Room to Read has an annual budget of approximately US$43.7 million and our global staff numbers over 500. Our global headquarters is located in San Francisco, and we have smaller fundraising offices in Delhi, New York, Hong Kong, London, Mumbai, Sydney, and Tokyo. We have an Asia Regional Office located in New Delhi and program offices in Colombo, Dar es Salaam, Dhaka, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Kathmandu, Lusaka, New Delhi, Pretoria, Phnom Penh, and Vientiane. 

Position Overview:

Reporting to the Controller, the Accounting Manager is responsible for managing the accounting function of Room to Read’s consolidated entities. S/He is responsible for coordinating with worldwide accounting and finance managers as well as non-accounting staff on all of Room to Read’s Global Office teams. The Accounting Manager coordinates with external auditors and tax consultants to prepare financial statements and state and federal tax filings.   Based in the San Francisco Global Office, this person manages up to three accounting team members, and works directly with an accounting team that is based in Room to Read’s New Delhi, India Global Office.
Duties & Responsibilities:
  • In collaboration with Country Finance & Accounting Officers, Regional Finance Director and Global Office accounting team, ensure accurate and timely monthly, quarterly and year end accounting closes and conduct and report worldwide consolidated data to Room to Read’s accounts.
  • Review country accounting data, identify and correct errors, recognize and compute accruals applying Generally Accepted Accounting Principles for non-profit transactions.  Includes working directly with Africa Finance & Accounting Officers.
  • In collaboration with the Development team, support donations processing and appropriate accounting treatment of diverse revenue streams.  Help design and implement policies as required.
  • Assemble and prepare analyses, presentations, and reports that summarize the Organization’s business activity and financial position in areas of income and expense. 
  • Working with the Finance team, prepare accurate financial information to support reporting, budgeting and forecasting.  Ensure alignment of chart of accounts with annual and quarterly budgets.
  • Prepare, publish and validate consolidated Board financial statements on a quarterly basis. 
  • Manage and monitor capital assets, propose and implement capitalization policies, useful lives, depreciation, acquisition and retirements.
  • Maintain updated knowledge and understanding of regulations, laws, industry trends, best practices, and developments regarding to accounting and taxes applicable to non-profit organizations and apply to the Organization’s operations.
  • Participate in accounting staff hiring process and provide ongoing training.
  • Serve as General Ledger system worldwide administrator for the Organization.  Provide accounting training and technical support for General Ledger and reporting systems to worldwide finance and accounting team. 
  • In coordination with the Controller:
  • Manage daily and monthly cash management and banking requirements.
  • Review and recommend updates to the Organization’s Finance and Accounting Policy Manual.
  • Ensure that the organization has adequate internal financial controls and establish additional policies and controls as necessary.
  • Coordinate consolidated and worldwide annual independent audits.
  • Ensure timely, complete and accurate tax and informational compliance filings such as forms 990, 199, 109, RRF-1, 5471, 3520 in the US as well as following up with statutory reporting for international entities.
  • Enforce and support implementation of short- and long-range team and departmental goals, objectives, policies and operating procedures.
  • Plan, assign, coach, direct work, appraise performance and implement continuous improvement initiatives.
    • Perform ad hoc accounting studies such as cost allocation plans, revenue projection and fund balance reporting.
Qualifications:Required:
  • Bachelors Degree in Accounting
  • 7-10 years of experience in all aspects of accounting, nonprofit experience highly desirable
  • Proven supervisory experience
  • Adept at using General Ledger systems
  • Proficient in using MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Prior experience in an international fast-paced, growth-oriented global or regional organization working with geographically remote staff, and success building relationships with diverse groups of people
  • Keen attention to detail, and  the ability to think strategically about meeting organizational goals
  • Experience implementing processes and controls
  • Superior problem solving, analytical, and decision making skills
  • Ability to enforce policies as required while remaining flexible to organizational needs
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Legally eligible to work in the United States; no sponsorship provided
Preferred:
  • MBA in Accounting or CPA
  • Experience with Epicor Enterprise, FRx and Raiser’s Edge.
  • Experience with US and non-US government grant reporting requirements
