The International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) is a worldwide network of judges and lawyers united in affirming international law and rule of law principles that advance human rights. 

The ICJ’s International Secretariat is based in Geneva, with offices in Bangkok, Kathmandu, Brussels, Johannesburg, and Guatemala City, and currently employs approximately 90 staff, long-term consultants and interns. In order to help meet the growing financial needs of the organisation, the ICJ is recruiting a full-time grant writer as a member of the Development and Donor Relations team. On a yearly basis the ICJ produces 150 concepts and project proposals, and over sixty project and programme reports, mostly in English. The grant writer will be responsible for the drafting and editing of proposals and reports for ICJ’s donors and potential donors. The ideal candidate is a skilled, highly motivated, enthusiastic and resilient native English speaker, editor and writer, able to communicate clearly, concisely and with sincere commitment to the ICJ’s cause.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the supervision of the Director of the Development and Donor Relations Team, the grant writer has the following duties:
  • Prepare institutional, programme and project proposals for governmental and private donors based on the planned programme of work and adapted to donor specifications and requirements;
  • Develop report narratives, which fulfil donor contractual requirements, giving attention to reporting on impact achievements; 
  • Produce a yearly organisational annual report;
  • Draft other communication material as needed, related to donor cultivation;
  • Undertake context (internet) research as required, to prepare background material; 
  • Interact regularly with programme staff and regional offices;
  • Participate actively in regular staff, team, and intra-team meetings.

Additional tasks might include:

  • Identify and cultivate new sources of potential funding in consultation with the Development team;
  • Support the tracking of existing grants, contracts, and funding application;
  • Support the planning of fundraising trips, events and other donor-related activities.
QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate will have:
  • Excellent English writing skills, including excellent spelling, grammar, punctuation and editing skills;
  • Proven track record of writing proposals, familiarity with log-frames and impact assessment;
  • Strong time management and organizational skills: be able to manage strict time lines and multiple deadlines, at short notice;
  • Team player with excellent interpersonal skills, able to bridge relationships in a multicultural working environment, sense of humour;
  • Creative thinker, sense of initiative and problem solving skills; 
  • Good research skills; 
  • Strong commitment to the ICJ cause; 
  • A relevant degree, preferably in journalism, marketing and communication, international relations, or a similar related field;
  • Additional fundraising qualifications and experience in working with a non profit an asset; 
  • Native English speaker. Other languages an asset.
An English writing test will be part of the selection procedure. The position is based either in Geneva or in Brussels.
