Continuing Medical Education Volunteer

Jhpiego is sponsoring an Encore Volunteer to work with the Medical Association of Tanzania (MAT) for a term of 4 months. MAT has expressed a particular interest in the development of a framework of a Continuing Medical Education system in Tanzania. Currently, once medical doctors are licensed there is no need for continuing education in order to retain their status. MAT would like to spearhead the process of instituting an appropriate system to ensure the continuing professional development of medical staff in Tanzania. This activity would require close coordination with the Medical Council of Tanzania as well as interaction with specialty associations (i.e., Association of Gynecologists and Obstetricians, Surgical Association, etc.). In addition, MAT would require some organizational strengthening as the current leadership works with the association on a voluntary basis. Costs Airfare, emergency medical evacuation insurance, room/board and local transportation for the assignment will be provided. Volunteers are asked to cover the cost of their passport, visa and vaccinations, and maintain their own health insurance. Any personal travel is at the volunteer's expense. Responsibilities:

Research and outline current models for continuing medical education systems Research and outline existing continuing medical education systems in the region Contact international agencies, such as WHO and WMA, to determine current trends, issues and future directions in the development of continuing medical education programs In partnership with MAT staff, develop a proposed work plan for establishing a continuing medical education program for Tanzania, together with implementation guidelines and a timeline Obtain written acceptance of the work plan from participating organizations NOTE: Some of the initial research could be done before departure for Tanzania

Required Qualifications:

Self-starter Degree in medicine and/or medical education Experience in planning and administering continuing medical education programs Experience in collaborating and negotiating with senior level professionals and management in professional societies in developing continuing medical education programs Experience in working in developing country health programs NOTE: Final candidates will also need to undergo a criminal background check
