JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title:
Director General

Responsible to:
The Steering Committee of the Association - with the President normally being the representative of the Steering Committee.

Main Purpose of Job:
The purpose of the Association is to protect and promote the best interests of the LPG industry in the Brussels policy arena. The post holder will be responsible for the management and operation of the Association, the development of policy positions and implementation and corresponding activities. The post holder will also maintain a high profile representative role for the industry and to represent members on an impartial basis.

Main Duties/Tasks:

1. To be responsible for ensuring that the whole of the Association’s policy work is carried out efficiently and effectively. This includes:-

a) Monitoring the political, economic, legislative and regulatory environments relevant to the industry.

b) Developing policies and proposing priorities for the Steering Committee’s consideration.

c) Ensuring communication, co-ordination and compatibility of policy positions throughout the Association membership.

2. To be the Association’s principal spokesman with general responsibility for the efficient execution of the Association’s representational work. This includes:-

a) Ensuring that regular contact is maintained on both a personal basis and by the Association generally with relevant senior European policy makers, MEPs, officials, journalists, regulators and other opinion formers.

b) Ensuring that the Association’s policies and views are well communicated to appropriate target audiences – this will include media appearances and interviews and addressing relevant conferences and seminars.

c) Ensuring that the Association is represented in other forums as appropriate.

3. To ensure that the Association provides a high quality and cost effective service to its members. To also attract new members and retain the support of existing members. Membership communication activity will ensure that members are informed of the Association’s activities and that activities reflect the various interests of the members.

4. To ensure that adequate technical standards are developed and maintained to provide credibility for the industry and help to provide continued safe and cost effective operation. These standards are to be developed in consultation with the appropriate officials where appropriate.

5. To promote the industry and the product at every opportunity and when appropriate co-ordinate with the membership to develop marketing initiatives.

6. To ensure that all work undertaken by the Association and all Association meetings are undertaken in accordance with EU Competition Law.

7. To provide information as requested from Association members, their customers, EU officials, the media and when appropriate the general public.

8. To be responsible for the finances of the Association, including the preparation of the annual budget, the maintenance of adequate financial controls, and the monitoring and reporting of expenditure against the budget; and to make recommendations on subscription levels for the Steering Committee’s consideration.

9. Subject to any guidelines agreed by the Steering Committee – to be responsible for all matters relating to the employment of staff.

10. To be responsible for the internal administration of the Association, for ensuring that the Association’s statutes are adhered to and that the Association complies with all relevant laws and regulations.

Person Specification
The post holder must be an enthusiastic and experienced manager with excellent organizational, communication and people management skills. They must also be able to think and act strategically using strong persuasive skills to promote the interests of the industry to all levels of influencers and policy makers. The ability to balance the needs of diverse members and represent their interests will also be core to this senior advocacy role.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Excellent inter-personal skills including proven advocacy and diplomatic experience
  • A minimum of 10 years experience of working within a credible organization and the attainment of a senior management level
  • Proven track record of achievement within previous roles
  • Educated to degree standard with additional post-graduate professional qualification
  • Excellent knowledge of English plus fluency in either French or German – additional language skills would be an advantage
  • Knowledge of the EU institutions and experience of working with them would be strongly desirable
  • Experience of working within the energy sector would be an advantage as would specific LPG understanding
  • Technical competency as required within regulatory lobbying would be beneficial
  • Willingness to travel and a high level of self motivation will be essential
