Director, Public Affairs & Government Relations

This position will build on the global service center model developed for DC, extending the advocacy approach by closely linking the NYC and DC teams with Atlanta and the group PAC teams around the globe. An extension of the DC team, this is a matrix-type capability in NYC that can support the Chairman's office on public policy and other public affairs and communications activities, the International Government Relations Network (IGRN), Science, Regulatory and the Office of Sustainability.

The position provides thought leadership and strategy recommendations to the Public Affairs and Government Relations team. This role has key contact with the New York City global community, UN agencies, global donor organizations, U.S. domestic & foreign affairs agencies (DC) and other key NYC-based stakeholders.

Function Specific Activities:

Build strategic relationships, monitor, have a presence within UN & global influencer community in NYC in coordination with same community in DC

Develop heightening engagement with key UN agencies, global donor organizations, U.S. domestic and foreign affairs agencies (NYC and DC) in order to maintain the ability to quickly reach decision makers on key issues or crises
Communicate and leverage the value of Company sponsorships and activities using publicity in order to build goodwill, cause consumers and customers to choose Company products, and cause key constituents to promote or defend Company interests. Support strategic activation of partnerships around key annual events (CGI) in coordination with IGRN team.

Intensify strategic impact of TCCC relationships with NYC-based national and global public policy organizations, coordinated with DC operations (eg: CFR, National Committee on US China Relations, Foreign Policy Association, etc.).

Closely collaborate on global PA with NYC-based consulting firms (e.g., Teneo).

Give presentations to all audiences (UN agencies, global donor organizations, KOLs (NY) & U.S. domestic & foreign affairs agencies (DC)and other key constituencies) in order to increase their receptivity to the Company's plans, strategies or financial results.

Manage briefings, special events, conference calls and other public events in order to convey information to key external audiences.

Assist in creating appropriate communications materials (e.g., speeches, brochures, reports, news releases, web sites and other on-line information, video and photography) for all NYC audiences.

Develop communications in collaboration with third-party groups (e.g., global policy organizations) in the development of communications in order to ensure alignment with Company objectives.
Arrange and attend private meetings and field visits with senior management and investors in order to increase their receptivity to the Company's plans, strategies or financial results.

Help inform allocation of Chairman and top executive's time in NYC global community

Actively participate (e.g., serve on boards of directors, commissions or task forces) in business, industry, trade, civic and community organizations in order to create positive business environment for the Company.

Education: Bachelor's Degree, advanced degree preferred

Technical Skills:

Government Relations: Knowledge of how government is structured and understanding of how public policy decisions are made and implemented. Includes ability to communicate effectively with politicians.

Lobbying Laws: Knowledge of federal, state and local lobbying laws, including limitations on gifts and entertainment of public officials.

Communications Knowledge: Knowledge of procedures and information for public relations/communications strategy development, planning and execution.

Relationships with Community Leadership: Knowledge of community key decision makers and opinion leaders, whose stand on issues impact the business environment for the company.

Independent Point of View: Knowledge of the external environment in which the Company's business is conducted. Includes ability to offer a broad perspective that extends beyond a particular functional discipline (e.g., marketing, finance) and draw upon knowledge that comes from frequent interaction with different departments, employees and sources and constituencies outside of the Company.

Food and Beverage Regulatory System: Knowledge of federal, state and local food and beverage regulatory systems (e.g., FDA, Departments of Agriculture and local Health Departments). Also includes knowledge of what the Company must do to comply with requirements (e.g., ingredients, packaging standards and product labeling).

Community and Special Interest Groups: Knowledge of community and special interest groups (e.g., objectives, leadership, methods) that have the potential to impact the Company's business or operating environment. Includes ability to influence these groups on behalf of the Company.
