Senior Director for Finance & Business Services

The Senior Director for Finance & Business Services is a senior management position at SAGE. Reporting to and partnering with the Executive Director, the Senior Director aligns SAGE’s financial direction in keeping with the organization’s Strategic and Business Plans. The Senior Director oversees all financial administration, and also oversees information technology, risk management, and legal affairs. The Senior Director must work closely with the Executive Director, staff executive team, the Board of Directors, and other important stakeholders to enable SAGE to fulfill its mission. The Senior Director is SAGE’s primary risk manager, and simultaneously works in partnership with the Executive Director to identify strategic financial opportunities that keep the organization healthy.

Responsibilities

Strategy

  • Partner with the Executive Director and Board Finance Committee on strategic financial and business service issues as they arise; provide recommendations based on financial analysis and projections.
  • Participate in the organization’s strategic planning process as an integral member of the staff executive team.
  • Engage the Executive Director and the Board Finance Committee to develop short- and long-term financial plans and projections; identify possible opportunities and risks to the organization’s financial health.

Financial and Risk Management

  • Oversee budgeting and the implementation of budgets; collaborate with staff to develop and adhere to organizational, department and program budgets.
  • Supervise a finance staff that currently includes a controller, senior accountant and junior accountant; supervise SAGE’s IT coordinator.
  • Manage cash flow and forecasting; ensure availability of funds as needed; oversee financing strategies and activities, as well as banking, vendor, and funder relationships.
  • Ensure finance staff’s preparation of timely and accurate preparation of all financial reporting materials for internal and external stakeholders; serve as SAGE’s spokesperson for fiscal matters and be able to communicate the organization’s financial position effectively to non-fiscal persons.
  • Coordinate audits and proper filing of tax returns; ensure adherence to government-related policies and procedures (e.g., allocation methodologies, vouchering, time-and-effort studies.)
  • Keep current with fiscal best practices; track and ensure compliance with guidelines set by “charity watchdog” groups.
  • Ensure maintenance of SAGE’s insurance policies at levels appropriate for the organization’s activities; oversee compliance with insurance requirements and documentation for vendors and funders.
  • Consult with legal counsel, as needed, on a variety of organizational risk issues (e.g., trademark, corporate governance, real estate.

IT Management

  • Oversee IT staff and resources to ensure efficient and effective business operations.
  • Provide forward-looking leadership to ensure that SAGE’s IT capacity is aligned with the organization’s Strategic and Business Plans

Qualifications/Requirements

The Senior Director for Finance & Business Services should be a strategic thinker, capable of providing a big-picture mentality, while still able to sustain the nuts-and-bolts operations of an entrepreneurial non-profit. S/he should be passionate about SAGE’s mission and understand and skillfully navigate the realities of the non-profit sector. S/he should be flexible and consistently demonstrate an ability to think creatively and outside of the box in the service of SAGE’s interests, while always maintaining the highest standards and alignment with industry best practices. Excellent communication is required for this position; the Senior Director must be able to speak in non-financial language, translate and teach financial literacy, communicate regularly and effectively with the Executive Director and staff executive team colleagues, and interact effectively with SAGE’s Board of Directors and multiple internal and external stakeholders. S/he should have significant experience managing a non-profit with multiple funding sources, especially from government agencies (federal, state, and city) and foundations.

The Senior Director for Finance & Business Services should have the following experience and attributes:

  • A minimum of a BS; an MBA and/or CPA is strongly preferred.
  • At least five years experience as CFO or equivalent, preferably in a non-profit with a budget of at least $5 million.
  • Experience in a senior financial management role, resulting in the development and implementation of creative financial management strategies and solutions.
  • Significant experience in or knowledge of non-profit accounting, including fund and grant accounting, compliance, and reporting.
  • Patience and experience in educating a variety of stakeholders about an organization’s finances and their implications.
  • An ability to work well across a variety of functions and departments.
  • A history of building strong relationships with funders and, if possible, an ability to bring pre-existing funder relationships to the organization.
  • Excellent judgment in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
  • Familiarity with the IT needs of an organization and how to guide strategies to address those needs
  • A “can-do” attitude and a willingness to make things possible.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability, team management, and interpersonal skills.
  • A passion for SAGE’s mission.

Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE) is the nation's largest and oldest non-profit organization working to improve the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) older adults. Since its founding in 1978, SAGE has developed and provided a wide array of social and community-based services in New York City, including case management, individual and group counseling, as well as some of the nation's first programs dedicated to LGBT older adults living with HIV, and Friendly Visiting for the homebound (among others).
