Senior Manager: Communication and Marketing

The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is a Research and Development Institution of excellence in South Africa, which operates within the National System of Innovation. The ARC has a mandate for innovative and creative agricultural research, technology development and transfer aimed at the advancement of South African agriculture. Its operations are overseen by the ARC Council appointed by and accountable to the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

The ARC seeks to appoint experienced and dynamic people to the following positions based at the ARC head office in Hatfield, Pretoria:

Senior Manager: Communication and Marketing
(5-year fixed-term contract)

Key performance areas:

  • Develop and implement a communication programme to support the ARC business strategy
  • Manage a team of internal communication staff and external contractors
  • Communicate ARC science and research through media relations, events and newsletters
  • Write and edit materials which communicate ARC science and research in a language appropriate to different audiences – including media materials, website content and annual reports
  • Develop and implement a stakeholder engagement and reputation management programme
  • Manage internal communication between staff at different campuses of the ARC
  • Manage the ARC website, annual report and all communication channels
  • Build awareness and engagement with ARC products and services
  • Manage the ARC brand and ensure that the ARC is positioned appropriately nationally and internationally
  • Coordinate corporate social investment and sponsorship activities
  • Manage customer satisfaction surveys and market environment analysis.

Requirements:

  • 8 years’ post-qualification senior communications management experience in a large organisation
  • Team and budget management experience
  • Ability to work at all levels with ARC executives, government officials and agriculture or business organisations
  • Relevant Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate subject. Master's qualifications and/or experience in agricultural science or agricultural operations will be an added advantage
  • Strategic thinking, analytical, problem-solving, negotiating and decision-making skills
  • Ability to effectively work under tight deadlines and manage projects independently
  • Ability to interpret, translate and communicate scientific research and concepts
  • Computer literacy skills.
