Senior Manager: Legal Services Agricultural Research Council (ARC)

The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is a Research and Development Institution of excellence in South Africa, which operates within the National System of Innovation. The ARC has a mandate for innovative and creative agricultural research, technology development and transfer aimed at the advancement of South African agriculture. Its operations are overseen by the ARC Council appointed by and accountable to the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

The ARC seeks to appoint experienced and dynamic people to the following positions based at the ARC head office in Hatfield, Pretoria:

Senior Manager: Legal Services
(5-year fixed-term contract)

Key performance areas:

  • Provide legal guidance to the ARC’s strategic and operational process and ensure legal compliance and adherence to proper Corporate Governance frameworks
  • Facilitate management’s understanding of legal implication with respect to potential business initiatives
  • Facilitate corporate understanding of legislation affecting the ARC and the agricultural sector, particularly with respect to research, technology development and transfer
  • Provide legal advice and litigation management for the organisation
  • Provide contractual dispute resolution support
  • Develop Service Level Agreements and criteria to monitor performance
  • Identify risks related to legislative compliance for the organisation and advise on mitigation strategies
  • Conduct Legislative Compliance Assessment in order to determine the level of compliance with legislation within the organisation and monitor compliance with all ARC policies, legislation, government policies, and legal requirements
  • Provide legal support to the ARC Council, sub-committees, divisions, departments and units within the ARC
  • Serve as part of a team to ensure effective knowledge and intellectual property management to facilitate technology transfer
  • Provide training to staff on laws applicable to the agricultural sector and intellectual property
  • Play a key role in guiding the ARC on the protection and management of Intellectual Property.

Requirements:

  • B Law degree (LLB), with specialisation in commercial law. LLM will be an added advantage
  • A qualified attorney with 5-8 years’ post-articles legal experience in a law firm
  • Possess good analytical, drafting, communications and interpersonal skills
  • Be able to work well under pressure and prioritise competing demands
  • Strategic thinking and analytical, problem-solving, negotiating and decision-making skills
  • Computer literacy skills.
