Job Title: Standard Supervisor

Salary: CU6

Reports to: Head of Department, Mass Communication

Division: Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs)

Job Purpose:

The Primary responsibilities for the Supervisor include setting editorial policy, ensuring accurate and timely production of the publication and keeping the news operation within budget.

The Standard newspaper, a community newspaper based at the Uganda Christian University in Mukono, is looking for a suitably qualified candidate for the position of Standard Supervisor

Qualifications and experience

  1. Hold a Masters degree in Journalism/Mass Communication from a recognized institute of higher learning.
  2. A degree in Journalism/Mass Communication from a recognized institute of higher learning.
  3. Should have at least 3 years newsroom experience
  4. Should be conversant with professional publishing programs like QuarkXpress or In design
  5. Has a strong command of the English language and the publication's writing style
  6. Is a committed Christian with a desire to promote good and ethical journalism in line with Uganda Christian University's vision and mission

Expectations

  1. Ability to lead an editorial team, and to coach and mentor budding journalists.
  2. A good understanding of the relevant regulatory framework for the newspaper’s operation.
  3. Sound news judgement
  4. Demonstrably excellent writing skills.
  5. A “nose” for news.
  6. Ability to set targets and enforce and observe deadlines.
  7. Ability to strategise for the overall growth and viability of the paper.
  8. The Supervisor will represent the newsroom at the department-head level and be expected to work closely with other department heads in the different university divisions.
  9. Mentoring skills-- The ability to recognize and train good talent from interns and staff. Build them both professionally and spiritually.

Job Title: Senior Lecturer – Counselling Psychology (1 position)

Salary: CU5

Reports to: Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences

Division: Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs)

Job Purpose:

The individual selected will teach and mentor counselling psychology Bachelors and Masters Students, provide university and professional service, and supervise students in completing dissertation.

Qualifications and experience

  1. Doctorate in Counselling Psychology from a recognized university.
  2. Applicants must be familiar with either qualitative or quantitative research methods and must show evidence of teaching ability and experience in counselling practice.
  3. Applicants must also demonstrate experience, expertise, and interest in at least one of the following areas: (a) child counselling, (b) marriage/family counselling, (c) HIV/health counselling, or (d) research methods and any other counselling courses.
  4. Should have at least 3 years’ experience in teaching and supervising research for either undergraduates or postgraduate students in an institution of higher learning.
  5. Should have published a minimum of two new scholarly articles in internationally recognized journals in their area of expertise.
  6. Membership to a relevant professional body.
  7. Must be a committed Christian

Main duties and Responsibilities

  1. Teaching normal workload of between 18 to 21 hours per semester.
  2. Prepare course outlines for all courses taught according to the University format.
  3. Prepare assessment tools and marking guides accordingly.
  4. Teaching and assessment of students in accordance with the University’s curriculum.
  5. Expected to be present for all lectures.
  6. Maintenance of regular office hours for attending to students’ questions.
  7. Participation in regular academic and administrative meetings.
  8. To chair and participate on ad-hoc or volunteer committees from time to time.
  9. Supervising students on placements – internships, research papers and projects.
  10. Advising students on academic issues.
  11. Should be willing to uphold the University’s instruments of Christian identity.
  12. Any other official duties as may be assigned by the Head of Department.

Job Title:Senior Lecturer – Social Work

Salary:CU5

Reports to:Head of Department Social Work and Social Administration

Division:Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs)

Qualifications and experience

  1. Hold a PhD in Social work from a recognized institute of higher learning.
  2. Higher qualification relevant to the programme such as a post graduate degree in social work, a professional certification or evidence of satisfactory progress towards such qualifications.
  3. A good social work honours degree from a recognized institute of higher learning.
  4. Should have taught at university level for at least three years and supervised undergraduate or postgraduate student’s research.
  5. Should have published a minimum of two scholarly articles in internationally recognized journals in their area of expertise.
  6. Membership to a relevant professional body.
  7. Must be a committed Christian

Main duties and Responsibilities

  1. Participate in department/faculty decision making.
  2. Contribute effectively to the design and planning of programmes including preparation of course documentation as required.
  3. Effectively oversee the progress, examination and assessment of the students as designated by the Head of Department.
  4. Promote the work of the department and participate in the selection and induction of students.
  5. Assist in the curriculum development of the Department’s academic programmes.
  6. Seek to enhance the quality of education and provision by ensuring that high standards of teaching, research and learning are maintained on the relevant courses to which they contribute.
  7. Use teaching and learning strategies, which encourage student involvement and advance their independent learning.
  8. Participate in work –related training and staff development.
  9. Carry out any other official duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.

Job Title: Senior Lecturer – Development Studies

Salary: CU5

Reports to: Head of Development Studies

Division: Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs)

Job Purpose:

This is a full time position where the suitable candidate must be able to teach at least two of the following disciplines:

(a) Policy analysis, (b) Governance and development, (c) Development planning, monitoring and evaluation, (d) the private sector and development, (e)Development economics, (f) Development Management, (g) Environmental management.

Qualifications and experience

  1. Hold a PhD in Development Studies or any other Social Sciences from a recognized institute of higher learning.
  2. Should have at least 3 years’ experience in teaching and supervising research for both undergraduates and postgraduate students in an institution of higher learning.
  3. Should have published a minimum of two new scholarly articles in internationally recognized journals in their area of expertise.
  4. Membership to a relevant professional body.
  5. Must be a committed Christian

Division: Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs)

Job Purpose:

This is a full time position where the suitable candidate must be able to teach at least two of the following subjects:

Development and Social Work, Social Work Theory and Practice, Elements of Social Work Intervention, Introduction to Social Work, Introduction to Social Work Administration, Social Work Research Methods, Social Work and Chronic Illness, Social Work and Mental Illness.

Qualifications and experience

  1. Hold a Master of Social Work degree from a recognized institute of higher learning.
  2. A good Social Work honours degree.
  3. Should have at least 3 years’ experience in teaching and supervising research for either undergraduates or postgraduate students in an institution of higher learning.
  4. Membership to professional associations, societies or bodies.
  5. Ability to use Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) to support teaching and learning.
  6. Must be a committed Christian.

Job Title: Accountant

Salary: CU 8

Department: Accounts

Reports to: The Financial Accountant

Division: Deputy Vice Chancellor (Finance & Administration)

Duty Station: Accounts Department

*Two year contract

Purpose of the Job

The person will be responsible for the Accounts Payables Function and will be under the direct supervision of the Financial Accountant.

Qualifications and experience

  1. A Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized institution of higher learning in a business related field.
  2. Have part professional qualifications such as ACCA or Certified Public Accountant (CPA) up to professional stage.
  3. Two (2) years experience in a busy organization.
  4. Computer literacy and the ability to use computer accounting packages is a requirement
  5. Mature, demonstrated Christian Commitment and high integrity.

Main duties and Responsibilities

The person will be required to have the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the required tasks;

  1. Prepares periodic budgets reports for Management action
  2. Ensure that budget variances are communicated to departments for action on a regular basis
  3. Assists the Financial Accountant in the preparation of weekly, monthly and quarterly Cash Flow Reports for Management Review
  4. Captures information regarding university expenditures into the Accounting System
  5. Establishes codes for all payments per department in accordance with the university chart of accounts
  6. Follows up interbank transfer transactions for restricted funds and projects
  7. Assists the Financial Accountant to follow up student account errors and bank queries
  8. Performs any other duties as may be assigned by the Financial Accountant and the University Bursar.
