Position Purpose
Save the Children South Africa is a fast growing and dynamic child rights organisation that has helped local communities improve the life of more than 90.000 vulnerable children in Africa since 1997. As part of their new strategic plan, STC is opening a new fundraising unit which will be based in Pretoria, a short commute from Johannesburg.
This position is responsible to provide the overall leadership, direction and management of Save the Children South Africa’s fundraising, marketing and communication activities. The incumbent is a member of the Senior Management Team, which calls for collaboration and shared organisational problem solving.
Principle Tasks and Responsibilities
  • Develop and manage a diverse fundraising program including committed giving, foundations, corporations, major gifts, events and planned giving
  • Build solid prospect management, research and donor stewardship programs to support the growth of revenue generated fundraising
  • Oversee backend systems and processes to support all aspects of fund development; develop tools for tracking fundraising revenue and donor prospects.
  • Lead, manage and coach a small team of 6 to 8 employees, ensuring that the Fundraising Department in Save the Children South Africa is optimally organized and staffed to achieve its vision and financial goals
  • Create an environment in which staff are supported, enabled, and empowered to deliver excellence and reach their full potential through creativity, collaboration and cross-functionality
  • Ensure adequately trained staff and systems are in place to produce the results required to meet the current and future departmental goals
  • Ensure the effective development, management and monitoring of the Fundraising Department’s annual budget. Track financial and program performance through regular monthly reporting including revenue/expense and budget controls
  • Build successful long-term relationships with donors, volunteers and other key stakeholders.
  • Lead and direct, as a member of the Senior Management Team, the development, planning, analysis and execution of the strategic and annual fundraising plans.
  • Contribute to management meetings, board committees and Save the Children International forums to address broad issues relating to strategic direction, policy development, planning and budgeting.
  • Manage communications and be responsible for developing media, website and online strategies to increase public awareness of Save the Children throughout South Africa
  • Design and implement a proactive marketing communications plan to promote key initiatives in the development plan, in cooperation with other Save the Children International marketing communication initiatives
  • Oversee all fundraising and marketing collateral materials (annual report, brochures, donor reports, newsletters, etc.) designed to profile Save the Children South Africa’s work and ensure adherence to the global brand standards.
  • Create an environment that ensures effective sharing of information with all facets of Save the Children International
  • Represent and promote Save the Children with enthusiasm and professionalism, building and strengthening relationships with key donors, funders and prospects, and the media as appropriate
  • Lead the field of fundraising and philanthropy, monitoring trends to ensure Save the Children benefits from current knowledge, resources and techniques
  • Infuse the culture of fundraising into all Save the Children’s activities

Position requirements
  • A minimum of 6 -10 years of fundraising experience with proven track record in Private Sector Fundraising (including mass-market fundraising, Corporate and HVD fundraising).
  • University degree or equivalent combination of work experience and education
  • Demonstrated strong leadership and experience (minimum of 5 years) in managing, motivation and coaching fundraising and communications staff within an evolving organizational culture.
  • A fundraising generalist with proven track record in developing fundraising plans which lead to increased revenue. Emphasis on mass-market fundraising and securing corporate partnerships
  • Experience in implementing donor stewardship strategies
  • Ability to use numbers to support all fundraising decisions
  • Previous experience working with fundraising databases
  • Excellent general computer proficiency – knowledge of systems including Internet and Microsoft Office(Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access)
  • Valid passport and ability to travel both nationally and internationally
  • Subject to police reference check (child protection requirement)
