Position: Research Fellow

The Stockholm Environment Institute
SEI is an independent, international research institute. Its mission is to support decision-making and induce change towards sustainable development around the world by providing integrative knowledge that bridges science and policy in the field of environment and development. With centres in six countries around the world, SEI has organised its work around four overarching themes. The theme Reducing Climate Risk supports the design, development and implementation of effective and equitable strategies for adaptation and mitigation in developing and developed countries. In January 2012, SEI was ranked number eight out of the world's top environment think tanks in the 2011 Global Go To Think Tank Report, compiled by the University of Pennsylvania's Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program.

The SEI Africa Centre was established in August 2008 and is based at the University of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), hosted by the Institute of Resource Assessment (IRA). The centre currently focuses on four themes of work:
(1) Climate change adaptation and mitigation;
(2) Sustainable energy options;
(3) Water supply and sanitation; and
(4) Water for agriculture and rural development.

Place in organization
Researcher located at SEI Africa Centre office, working primarily on projects based in SEI Africa Centre, but also working collaboratively with researchers at other SEI centres.

Supervisor
Reports to Centre Director, SEI Africa, and to managers of the specific projects in which researcher is participating.

Terms of employment
2 year employment, with possibilities for subsequent contract extension. Probation period: 6 months, with decision on continued employment to be taken at least 1 month before end of probation period.

General tasks
The Research Fellow will be expected to help build up SEI’s Climate Change work in Africa. The Fellow shall contribute to SEI projects, both research grant-funded and contract-driven work, primarily in the field of climate change mitigation and adaptation, in line with SEI’s research theme on Reducing Climate Risk. The work will be carried out in close cooperation with other staff of SEI Africa office, staff of other SEI Centres and SEI partners, such as Institute of Resource Assessment at University of Dar es Salaam. Depending on workload of SEI Africa office, and the capacity and interests of the Fellow, scope of work may extend to e.g. bio-resources, ecosystem services or other research subjects or themes of interest to the Fellow and the Institute.

Specific tasks
1. Undertake research on climate change in existing and future projects;
2. Develop new project ideas and contribute to obtaining necessary funding to expand the portfolio of projects on climate change in the SEI Africa Centre;
3. Support research and communication and outreach activities of the climate change work at SEI;
4. Plan and coordinate activities at SEI Africa within the theme Reducing Climate Risk;
In cooperation with the SEI manager(s) in charge, carry out tasks related to the SEI/Africa Climate Policy Centre cooperation; and
Maintain a contact database of researchers, decision-makers and partner organisations in Africa relevant to the theme Reducing Climate Risk.

Qualifications

Essential Requirements
• Fluency in spoken and written English;
• Research training to at least PhD level in relevant subjects, such as Geography, Agriculture, Lands, Forestry, Environmental Science, Anthropology or Political Science. Strong preference is given to candidates whose degrees have included work on climate change;
• Solid background in research on climate change mitigation and adaptation in Africa and/or developing countries in other regions;
• Experience in fundraising for significant projects and liaising with funding agencies;
• Background in policy-relevant and interdisciplinary research, and profound understanding of the role of climate change role in sustainable development;
• Knowledge and capability to conduct studies and analysis on policies and programmes for climate change, and to write articles, policy briefs, working papers and other outreach publications;
• Experience in capacity building activities;
• Ability to coordinate workshops, manage publications and supervise interns;
• Ability to represent SEI at conferences and travel on international trips of duration up to one month; and
• Ability to work independently without much instruction from the management, as well as comfort working in a team, including virtual teams, as team leader and as team member.

Desirable Attributes
• Fluency or working ability in French, KiSwahili and/or Spanish;
• Post-doc experience in relevant subject such as Geography, Agriculture, Lands, Forestry, Environmental Science, Anthropology or Political Science;
• Track record of publications on climate change issues in peer-reviewed journals; and
• Comfortable with detailed analysis and fieldwork to support research activity.
