Director-General - The National Trust

Director-General, The National Trust

Swindon

Salary - Competitive

The Trust was founded in 1895. It looks after more than 250,000 hectares of countryside (630,000 acres), 707 miles of coastline and more than 350 houses, gardens, woodlands, monuments, nature reserves and parks. It has 4 million members, involves over 60,000 volunteers and employs 5,500 staff and 2,700 seasonal staff. Last year, 19 million people visited its properties. The Trust has an annual turnover above £400m, much of it from membership (£130m), investment income (£45m), rent (£35m) and fundraising (£24m). Every year we spend over £100m on conservation projects.

The Trust has now expanded to four million members. We are aiming at five million. This will require a faster-moving National Trust, devolving power to properties and reducing bureaucracy.

The new Director-General must personify the Trust in conservation, visitor experience and public profile, building the Trust’s relationships across government, industry and the heritage.

He or she must be capable of leading a substantial and complex organisation, able to work with 5.500 full time staff and 60,000 volunteers, dealing with similar organisations in conservation and the heritage, with businesses, politicians and the media. Above all we are seeking someone able to deliver the Trustees’ strategy clearly and simply through a nationwide organisation of local properties. We regard this as an exciting and wide-ranging job, requiring organisational and inspirational talents.
