FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM MANAGER

ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION: The Legatum Center for Development and Entrepreneurship was founded on the belief that economic progress and good governance in low-income countries emerge from entrepreneurship and innovations that empower ordinary citizens. The Center was founded at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2007 through a structured gift from Legatum, a global investment firm. The Center runs a highly competitive fellowship program for MIT graduate students who intend to launch enterprises in low-income countries. In addition, the Center convenes an annual conference, hosts lectures, and supports teams of enterprising men and women at MIT who are passionate about starting viable businesses in the developing world.

MIT Legatum Center for Development and Entrepreneurship seeks a Fellowship Program Manager with special knowledge about Asia and Latin America. This position reports to the Assistant Director or her designee.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Fellowship Program Manager (FPM):

  • Is responsible for managing the recruitment and selection of Fellows from Asia and Latin America annually, and strengthening the alumni networks in those regions.
  • Collaborates closely with the FPM for Africa to provide Legatum Fellows with the training, knowledge, and support needed to create businesses in low-income countries.
  • Takes work direction from FPM for Africa to ensure smooth running of the Center’s flagship program.
  • Organizes other Legatum programs such as the Seed Grant Teams.

Both FPM’s will:

  • Ensure the success of the Fellows while they are in residence, continue support of the Fellows as alumni, and monitor/evaluate the program as a whole.
  • Provide coaching and evaluation of Fellows’ business projects, organizing Fellowship events, and monitoring project progression.
  • Create a network of resources to assist the fellows in the advancement of their projects, including but not limited to mentors, trainers, investors, and external partner organizations.
  • Supervise temporary and part-time support staff as needed.

Qualifications


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Background & Training: Bachelor’s degree in business, international relations, economics, or a relevant field and a minimum of five years of direct or related experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered. The ideal candidate will have a strong business background in international development or international business, “on the ground” business experience in Asia or Latin America, preferably both regions.

Necessary Skills: Experience in mentoring or advising college students, or managing a fellowship program. Collaborative, detail oriented, nimble and flexible in prioritizing work. Proven excellent communication skills (written and verbal). Demonstrated sound judgment and discretion with confidential materials. Direct supervisory experience or experience directing teams.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in evaluating business plans, researching markets, and conducting training;
  • Experience in consulting start-ups and working with angel investors, and/or Venture Capital firms;
  • Regional specialization in Latin America or Asia, or the willingness to learn.
