GENERAL MANAGER: MINING

Alexkor/RMC-JV is a diamond mine situated in Alexander Bay at the mouth of the Orange River on the west coast of South Africa. The following vacancy exists within the joint venture undertaken by Alexkor Limited and the Richtersveld Mining Company (RMC).

GENERAL MANAGER: MINING

Requirements:

• A Bachelor’s degree in Mining, Geological or Metallurgical Engineering (or related fields) or any recognised tertiary qualification
• A postgraduate qualification such as an MBA, MBL or similar qualification would enhance the application
• At least 10 years’ experience in an alluvial diamond mining environment at senior management level would be preferable
• The ability to lead and manage relationships inside and outside the Mine in conjunction with the Parliament of the Republic of South Africa, the Department of Public Enterprises, the Board, the community, unions, environmental groups, regulators and legislators, and the ability to function effectively with them
• A strong communicator, with the ability to maintain good relationships with the workforce, and build and maintain a good rapport with the local and regional communities.

Duties: As General Manager: Mining, the successful candidate will be responsible for strategically leading the mining operation, and ensuring continuous transfer and dissemination of mining learning throughout the mine, as well as utilising innovative practices and technologies to continuously improve production.

The role will also be responsible for:

• Providing operational, technical and managerial leadership to a team of six Senior Managers (HODs) on the Mine
• Developing and implementing Mine strategies
• Setting production targets
• Optimising profitability of the Mine in accordance with the vision and framework set by the Alexkor RMC JV Board
• Making and monitoring sound financial, budget and cost management decisions
• Setting and adhering to safety, health and environmental principles
• Managing and developing people (key to this role)
• Formulating and overseeing the execution of sound business practices and building implementation processes, policies and practices that will maximise operational efficiencies and competitive advantage.
