Shell Canada is looking for an Advanced Process Control Engineer for our Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta location.
Responsibilities:
The Advanced Process Control (APC) Engineer is responsible for delivering APC and Advanced Application solutions to various process units in the Scotford Upgrader. The primary roles are to develop and maintain APC and Advanced Applications in the operating facilities,and provide day-to-day operational support for improved unit profitability and stability.

The APC Engineer will also provide support to the Real-Time Optimization (RTO) applications/projects,and work closely with Instrumentation and Control team to provide support to base layer control system.

The position reports to the APC & RTO Manager within the Technical Assurance Technology Department in the Scotford Upgrader.

Principal accountabilities include:
  • Identify unit operation constraints and reliability risks, and determine cost effective solutions. Conduct benefit and cost studies for yield shift, variability reduction and energy savings.
  • Design and implement APC and Advanced Applications for profitability, energy, stability, and environmental improvements. The applications include but not limited to SMOC, RQE, data analysis and statistical control (e.g. PCA and PLS),and other advanced applications that facilitate process start-up, operation, monitoring and optimization.
  • Set up the hardware and software platform for APC development and implementation, such as the OPC servers.
  • Provide daily monitoring, troubleshooting and continuous performance improvement of APC and Advanced Applications to achieve maximum benefits.
  • Develop comprehensive KPI’s for APC and Advanced Applications, and ensure the KPI’s are maintained, regularly updated and reported.
  • Provide day-to-day technical support to operations for unit performance campaign, and resolving complex process and control issues.
  • Work closely with key stakeholders to ensure APC and Advanced Application projects are adequately advocated and benefits are appropriately supported.
  • Design, modify and tune base layer controls relevant to APC and Advanced Applications.
  • Work closely with the Instrumentation and Control team to provide shutdown and start-up operational support.
  • Support RTO Engineer for the development and maintenance of real-time optimization and DataRec applications.
  • Provide control input to capital project development. Provide control support to ISU, T/A, HAZOP and risk assessments.
  • Responsible for Operator training for APC and Advanced Applications.
  • Provide mentoring and training to junior APC engineers.


Requirements:
  • Must have legal requirement to work in Cnaad on a full time basis for anyone other than their current employer.
  • B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering or related areas. A M.Sc. or Ph.D. degree in Process Control or Optimization is an asset.
  • Eligible to APEGGA Professional Engineer accreditation.
  • Minimum 3 year operating plant experience in an oil refinery or petro-chemicals facility.
  • Experience with commercial Model-Based Predictive Control systems, such as SMOC, Profit Controller or DMC.
  • Hands-on experience with a DCS system, preferably Foxboro or Honeywell.
  • Effective interpersonal, communication and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated capability to work independently but yet participate as a member of a team.
  • Can prioritize and manage expectations in the case of competing requests from stakeholders.
