Background
The Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) is internationally recognized as a centre of excellence for education, research and service delivery in the field of tropical medicine. The Department of Public Health concentrates on the health of populations, by research on epidemiology and control of tropical diseases as well as the study of health care organization, health systems and policy. The department aims at (1) a reduction of disease burden, especially of tropical and infectious diseases; (2) the optimal organisation of accessible, adequate, integral and efficient health systems, with special attention to the poor and other risk groups; (3) the development of an international health policy based on universal human rights. The Department counts today 10 Professors and is organized in two groups: 1. Epidemiology& Disease Control and 2. Health Systems.
A position is opened in the group ‘Health Systems’ for a new professorship (Tenure Track faculty position) in the field of health economics with as main academic responsibilities to conduct research, training and capacity building on innovative health care financing mechanisms. The position reports to the Head of the Department of Public Health.
Responsibilities
- Develop the research field of international health financing mechanisms and policy in an autonomous way, by building a research portfolio and a team of scientists. Undertake and lead international research projects, in collaboration with other ITM units and overseas partners in the aforementioned fields;
- Build capacity and disseminate new knowledge on innovative health financing mechanisms in the South. Develop novel approaches to knowledge management;
- Participate in as well as develop international networks in these fields;
- Attract and manage external funding for these activities and projects;
- Take actively part in the health systems group of the public health department;
- Take actively part in interdepartmental training, research and capacity building programmes of the IT.
Profile
- You have a Ph.D. degree in economics, health economics, or a related field;
- Your publication record and other scientific output in the field of health economics or health services research is commensurate with years of professional experience;
- You have a successful track record in raising research funding;
- You have knowledge of/ and experience in higher education. You are able to mentor doctoral students and contribute effectively to innovative teaching programs in both the Master degree curricula as the Ph.D. training courses of ITM;
- You have at least two years of working experience in a tropical country;
- You are a good communicator, a driven leader and a skilled people's manager;
- You have excellent knowledge of English, Dutch and French;
- Working knowledge of Spanish or Portuguese is an asset.
