Introduction and host information

During the last few years, the Centre for Financial Regulation and Inclusion(Cenfri) has actively focused on the research area of microinsurance. Thisincludes various country diagnostics throughout the world (recent diagnostics include Brazil, Kenya, Ethiopia, Zambia), as well business model innovations in microinsurance.Cenfri’s microinsurance research activities are currently driven by 14 staff members and several associates who are directly engaged in microinsurance research.

This research has revealed that access to insurance remains relatively low inmost developing countries (outside of embedded products such as creditlife). Penetration varies from below 5% of the population in many Sub Saharan African countries to a high of 45% in South Africa, albeit dominated by funeral insurance.

Cenfri is developing an Innovation Lab (InnoLab) to assist in speeding up thedelivery of profitable and appropriate insurance. The InnoLab will use applied research to (i) support the private sector in identifying both disruptive innovations and to answer the question around how to drive profitable and sustainable scale in microinsurance and (ii) apply theselessons to the regulatory environment in a confidential manner to assist inthe creation of an enabling regulatory environment for microinsurance. InnoLab will work in collaboration with private sector partners and support the rollout or improvement of their insurance offerings in the low income market. In return the InnoLab will capture key lessons to share with the wider insurance community to achieve the common objective of increasing the availability of better insurance products for a greater number of low income households in the African continent.
