Postdoctoral Fellow – Integrated Surface Water / Groundwater Modeler Vientiane, Lao PDR

The Person and the Job:

If you have recently earned a PhD in Hydrogeology or a related discipline from an internationally reputed university with a specialization in integrated surface water and groundwater modeling, you could be the person that the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) is looking for. We seek a highly motivated Postdoctoral Fellow (PDF) to work with researchers at the IWMI to develop and apply integrated hydrologic modeling approaches that collectively address pressing problems associated with flooding, droughts, groundwater exploitation and livelihood enhancement in South and Southeast Asia. We anticipate that by the end of the Postdoctoral term with IWMI, you will have generated innovative approaches and solutions that create impact by having your ideas and work published and presented to scientific colleagues and decision makers, and also have gained rich experiences in the process. This position would contribute to a multi-disciplinary team effort and will be based at the Southeast Asia regional office of IWMI in Vientiane, Lao PDR, reporting to the Senior Researcher based there.

You will:

·         develop tools that integrate surface water/groundwater processes at the basin scale in relation to the capturing of excess floodwater via managed aquifer recharge, and assess the opportunities for utilization and associated downstream impacts;
·         use these tools to devise implementation strategies and evaluate those strategies against field observations;
·         prepare research reports and journal articles for publication in international peer-reviewed journals; and
·         present research results at conferences and workshops.

You must possess:

·         a PhD in the field of hydrogeology or environmental/ irrigation/ civil engineering or a closely related water resources discipline;
·         competency and experience in the use of integrated surface water and groundwater modeling methods;
·         proficiency in industry standard groundwater modeling software such as MODFLOW, FEFLOW or others;
·         the ability to use and collect field data to generate robust conceptual and quantitative models;
·         proficiency in one or more programming languages, and an ability to develop or adapt computer programs to enhance modeling capability;
·         strong analytical skills and a learning attitude;
·         excellent written and oral skills in English; and
·         record of publications in high-level journals.

It would be useful if you have:

·         demonstrated competency in the application of GIS techniques to solving geo-hydrological problems; and
·         experience in conducting fieldwork and/or solute transport modeling.

This is an internationally recruited position with a competitive salary and benefits package, which includes a housing allowance, transport, education, shipping assistance, annual home leave and health insurance package. Postdoctoral scientists are appointed on fixed two-year contracts.
