Professor of Arabic Literature and Culture

Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service in Qatar (SFS-Qatar) invites applications for an open-rank, core-track position in the field of Arabic Literature and Culture starting in August 2013. Core faculty positions are full-time positions which carry the job security and commitment to academic freedom associated with tenure-track appointments.

The position is part of a major faculty expansion funded by Qatar Foundation with the triple aim of supporting SFS-Qatar’s enhanced research mission, diversifying our curriculum, and growing student numbers. This expansion includes four new positions in Arabic. The new appointments are designed to make SFS-Qatar into the leading center for Arabic for Heritage Learners, as well as a regional leader in world-class research and teaching in Arabic and Arab literature.

Specialization is open, but the successful candidate is expected to have strong training in both prose and poetic genres of Arabic literature, modern and/or classical. The successful candidate will have a completed Ph.D. in a literary discipline with a clearly demonstrated specialty in Arabic. Experience with teaching Arabic will be beneficial. Applicants of advanced rank must have substantial research accomplishments and evidence of ambitious ongoing research agendas; entry-level applicants must have exceptional promise of future research productivity; an early track record of publications will be an advantage. Applicants must be able to teach in English as well as in Arabic. The candidate is expected to offer undergraduate courses, play a leading role in strengthening the program, and complement the research and teaching interests of other faculty members.
