Positions in Economics, Open Rank (Assistant/Associate/Full Professor)

Georgetown University’s Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service (SFS-Q) aims to recruit four research-oriented economists for core faculty positions in the School of Foreign Service in Qatar, as part of a major expansion of curricular and research programs. Core faculty positions are full-time positions which carry the job security and commitment to academic freedom associated with tenure-track appointments.
We also solicit applications for visiting and visiting research professor positions. Visiting positions are 1 or 2 year appointments.
Elements of the research program in economics at SFS-Q include a regular seminar series, a research mentoring program that brings senior scholars chosen by incumbent faculty to Doha for brief visits, a visiting scholar program that supports more extensive involvement by leading scholars, periodic post-doctoral research workshops, opportunities to spend time at the Economics Department on our main campus in Washington, DC (http://econ.georgetown.edu/), and regular research semesters. For additional details regarding programmatic support for economics faculty research at SFS-Qatar please see http://qatar.sfs.georgetown.edu/321707.html.
The normal teaching load is 2-2 for core faculty and visiting faculty (entry-level core faculty appointments ordinarily include teaching load reductions during the first year). Up to two positions may be designated as visiting research professorships, which carry appropriately light negotiated teaching loads. We seek applications from colleagues at all ranks in economic development, international economics, political economy, and related fields (e.g., energy, environmental, resource security, etc.). We are particularly interested in hearing from colleagues who want to establish research teams.
Applicants at advanced rank must have substantial research accomplishments and evidence of ambitious ongoing research agendas; entry-level applicants must have exceptional promise of future research productivity. All applicants must have outstanding teaching credentials.
Qatar offers a diverse, safe and family-friendly environment. Compensation and expatriate benefits packages are excellent and SFS-Q provides generous research support and support for conference travel; these appointments include generous start-up research funds. Faculty at the School of Foreign Service in Qatar are eligible to apply for Qatar National Priorities Research Program grants from the Qatar National Research Fund. These competitive grants are up to $350,000 per year for up to three years. QNRF also offers competitive research grants for early-career scholars. For more information see http://www.qnrf.org/. For more information on the School of Foreign Service in Qatar, see http://qatar.sfs.georgetown.edu/.
Interviews will be conducted at the Allied Social Sciences Associations (ASSA) meetings in San Diego January 4 - 6, 2013. We will be happy to consider alternative arrangements for exceptional candidates who are unable to travel to San Diego. Applicants should provide a cover letter, curriculum vitae, sample(s) of scholarly writing, statements on research and teaching, copies of teaching evaluations (if available), and three letters of reference. Applications for this position must be made via Georgetown’s online application management system via the Apply button below. Faxed or emailed applications will not be accepted.
Questions about the online application system should be directed to Nick Starvaggi at nhs22@georgetown.edu. Queries about the position should be directed to Dr. Kai-Henrik Barth, Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs, at GrowSFSQ@georgetown.edu. Georgetown University is an Equal Opportunity, Affirmative Action Employer fully dedicated to achieving a diverse faculty and staff. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply and will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, sex, sexual orientation, age, religion, national origin, marital status, veteran status, disability or other categories protected by law.
The position described in this advertisement is part of a large, multi-year strategic expansion of the faculty of the School of Foreign Service in Qatar. Faculty at any rank in the discipline noted above as well as other social science/humanities disciplines, in particular political science/IR, are invited to express interest at any time via GrowSFSQ@georgetown.edu.
