The University of Surrey and the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) are making a strategic investment in a Chair of Radionuclide Metrology to develop research in radioactivity metrology and/or radiochemistry in close collaboration with the nuclear industry. We are seeking to appoint a world-class radioactivity metrologist/radiochemist with an interest in the measurement of radioactivity for applications in the nuclear industry. Candidates should have an outstanding record of research and development in this field, either at a university or within the nuclear industry. 

The job holder will be a member of both NPL and the University of Surrey, and should expect to be based at NPL approximately 80% of the time. The main duties of the post are to develop research in radioactivity metrology / radiochemistry for the nuclear industry, principally through supervision of a team of NPL researchers, and to develop a long term strategy for radioactivity metrology for the nuclear industry. The job holder will also work actively with existing research groups at the University to develop Surrey-NPL collaboration and joint research and teaching programmes. At NPL the job holder will oversee governance of research programmes in radiation metrology, including assuring compliance with ISO17025 and NPL procedures, and the development of NPL/Surrey activity through publication, participation in scientific conferences, developing training courses and building a network with the nuclear industry. 

The successful candidate would be expected to demonstrate a substantial reputation in research in radioactivity metrology / radiochemistry with an outstanding record of research funding and publication in scientific journals. He/she should also demonstrate a commitment to maximise the impact of the research, through supporting the development of new products & services and establishing a network of contacts in the UK nuclear industry. In addition to building as strong research programme the job holder will also develop new NPL/Surrey postgraduate programmes and industry-focussed training courses. 

As part of the job application, candidates should submit a brief Research Proposal (maximum 3 pages) that clearly describes your personal vision for radiation metrology at NPL and Surrey, and which also addresses the needs of the UK nuclear industry. 

The job holder will be employed by the University of Surrey, and will be located within the Department of Physics, with full access to the USS final salary pension scheme. They will be seconded to NPL for 4 days per week, or equivalent, and will be expected to travel to both Guildford and NPL as required.
