The business and economics unit is looking for an Assistant Editor to lead coverage of business for output in Salford, principally on Breakfast and 5 Live. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring they continue to offer the most imaginative and challenging treatments of subjects of great complexity. You will be expected to demonstrate a clear vision for how the output can be further developed, for how the programmes can deepen their relationship with audiences and businesses, as well as to seek opportunities for further shared commissioning with other parts of the unit.

Role

This is a new and senior position in the business and economics unit of BBC Newsgathering, based in Salford. You will be responsible for overseeing the business coverage on Breakfast on BBC One and on Radio 5 Live, and for leading the team of producers and presenters who deliver it. These pieces of output are central to the success of the BBC’s coverage of issues of huge interest to audiences, and the team in Salford has quickly established itself by developing a track record of covering a breadth of UK stories and businesses unmatched elsewhere in the BBC. They produce daily and weekly specialist business programmes, including Wake Up To Money and the Consumer Panel on 5 Live, as well as a great range of OBs. The team also provides daily two-ways for local radio stations via GNS.

Requirements

You will need to demonstrate an understanding of the challenges and needs of TV business output and have the ability to originate story ideas.  You will also need excellent management skills with highly developed communication skillls.  You will need the ability to build relationships/rapport with a variety of key people e.g. reporters, contributors, other commissioners in BBC News and influence them where necessary.  You will also need to be flexible - and willing, if necessary, to work away from the office.   You will need to be able to motivate and develop editorial staff to produce innovative and imaginative content, and make major decisions with authority and under pressure and to identify, prioritise and interpret key stories of the day.
