Summary
Organisation  Search for Common Ground (SFCG) is an international conflict transformation organization that aims to transform how people deal with conflict – away from adversarial approaches and toward cooperative solutions.  With Headquarters in Washington DC and Brussels, we design and implement multifaceted programs that aim to resolve conflict and prevent violence.  We seek to help conflicting parties to understand their differences and act on their commonalties.

Programme

The Partners in Humanity (PiH) programme seeks to serve as a catalyst for vibrant, constructive Muslim-Western partnerships that reflect mutual respect based on an ongoing process of mutual collaboration and learning. In particular, the programme aims to address the mutual suspicion and fear that exist Muslim and Western societies and individuals, while identifying areas to work together to achieve shared interests.
The Common Ground News Service (CGNews), the programme’s longest running project, distributes 5 original constructive articles on Muslim-Western issues every week to thousands of e-mail subscribers and hundreds of print and electronic media outlets worldwide in Arabic, English, French, Hebrew, Indonesian and Urdu.    Its editorial board consists of 9 editors located in Washington, Geneva, Tunis, Islamabad, Jerusalem and Jakarta.   Summary of Post:   The full-time position is based in Washington, DC and reports to the Director of Partners in Humanity.

Responsibilities
Responsibilities:  Managing Editor (75%)
  • Manage production and distribution of Common Ground News (CGNews) ,http://www.commongroundnews.org
  • Commission and edit relevant articles and maintain high quality of content
  • Coordinate the involvement of the international team of editors
  • Stay on top of trends, news and events affecting Muslim-Western understanding globally
  • Manage the CGNews brand both externally and within SFCG (quality, website, online presence, etc)
  • Manage and build relationships with distributing editors of print and online media outlets around the world to maintain and grow CGNews reach
  • Monitor and evaluate the quality, quantity and impact of CGNews articles, including overseeing the CGNews database and archives
  • Produce regular internal and external (donor) reports
  • Contribute to proposal development
  • Oversee CGNews project budgets
  • Ensure compliance with donor requirements
Program Officer (25%)
  • Project management of other PiH projects from design through implementation, monitoring and evaluation, as needed. Responsibilities may include:
    • Overseeing project logistics (venue, bookings, travel)
    • Developing relationships with project participants and stakeholders
    • Managing project budgets and deliverables
    • Assisting with project design and development
    • Monitoring and evaluating projects with respect to specific indicators
  • Contribute to the overall growth and success of the programme
As job descriptions cannot be exhaustive, the position-holder may be required to undertake other duties that are broadly in line with the above key responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications
-          Graduate degree in political science, conflict resolution, journalism, social sciences or other related field preferred (or Bachelors plus relevant work experience) –         Exceptional media-quality English-language editing skills. -          A minimum of 3 years of professional experience in editing and/or project management – from project development to monitoring and evaluation. -          Clear and concise writing and communication skills. -          Comprehensive understanding of global Muslim-Western relations, including a solid understanding of Islam. -          Report writing and proposal development experience. -          Knowledge of key players in the media space. -          Experience working with print, online and social media, preferred. -          Technical knowledge of the management of listservs, databases, websites and other online communication vehicles. -          Ability to work well with a multi-cultural, multi-location team. -          Self-starter and a motivated worker. -          Entrepreneurial thinker. -          Ability to manage multiple projects with inflexible deadlines. -          Openness to diverse perspectives. -          Budgeting and financial management skills a plus. -          Fluency in a second CGNews language – ideally Arabic or French – a plus
