Department

BBC Radio 5live is the home of breaking news, sport and topical debate.  Launched in 1994, the station relocated to Salford Quays in 2011. 5live has grown its listenership to 6.5 million, operating its award winning 24/7 news and sport schedule, led by daily presenter-led news and discussion programmes combined with key brands including 606, Fighting Talk and Sportsweek.  In order to cover the full range of sports, 5live’s digital sister station, (5live Sports Extra) was launched in 2002 and is also managed by the 5live leadership team.
Both stations are supported by a growing interactive platform, which (together with social media) will continue to extend interaction and audience engagement.

Role

The Controller of 5live has creative, editorial and leadership responsibility for 5live and 5live Sports Extra.
Supported by a small commissioning team, the station has journalists covering news and sport from across the UK and beyond. Based in Salford, the Controller will focus on continuing to build 5live’s reputation for high quality journalism and debate, especially around breaking news stories. Equally, the role will manage the creative presentation of a wide and diverse range of sports, including major sporting events which bring the nation together.
Beyond this, the Controller will be expected to play an active role in the wider BBC both in Salford and beyond – representing 5live at the BBC North and Audio & Music Boards, and maintaining strong relationships with stakeholders in News and Sport and the wider radio industry.

Requirements

The successful candidate will have extensive programme making and commissioning experiencecoupled with an understanding and passion for the station’s brand values and its target audiences. With previous experience of managing teams within complex, fast-paced environments you will have a successful track record in building and maintaining positive relationships with multiple stakeholders, including at senior levels. An appreciation of emerging digital technologies and their potential to deliver enhanced services would be advantageous.
