Street Child of Sierra Leone Communication and Campaigning intern

Street Child
Ten years after a brutal civil war, Sierra Leone is still one of the poorest places in the world. While this small and beautiful West African country is now at peace, our own research indicates that there are around 50,000 children relying upon the streets of Sierra Leone for their survival. We hope to help them all.
Street Child is a volunteer-led charity which works with street kids and out of school children. Working with children still living on the streets, we help them find security through counselling and the stabilising presence of our social workers. We then work towards reunifying them with their families, getting them back in school and helping them to stay there by offering their family small business grants and training. We also help to provide deprived rural communities with their first-ever basic schools giving children the chance to thrive through education.
Our pledge is to spend 90% of our donations in Sierra Leone, and to keep our office overheads in London as low as possible. As a result of our work since 2008, nearly 2,000 children have been reunited with their families, and over 10,000 are now in school.
Communications Role
At Street Child, we are very proud of our volunteer-based approach. Our small London team provides strategic oversight for the programme work in Sierra Leone, focuses on fundraising and communications for the development and expansion of Street Child, and provides administrative and other support for the work in Sierra Leone and beyond.
We are very lucky to have some fantastic volunteers committed to our cause, and we are now looking for an outstanding individual to undertake a communications internship for 3-5 days a week at our London office (travel expenses paid, hours flexible) reporting to the Communications Director.
In turn, we aim to offer you invaluable work experience and the chance to support some of the most vulnerable children in the world. Internships at Street Child are guaranteed to be busy and varied and this is a great opportunity to offer real value to our team whilst gaining valuable experience in return. Equally you will have the opportunity to shape your own experience here according to your skills, goals and knowledge, and we will do our best to support you in your career development.
The ideal candidate would have the following:
  • Strong academic credentials;
  • A proactive and professional approach;
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills;
  • Experience of writing copy and use of social media in a professional capacity;
  • Experience of digital media, in particular, website development a significant advantage;
  • Ability to work both independently and as a part of a team;
  • A keen interest in charity and development.
