Department of Energy and Climate Change – Analyst Opportunities
The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) is a small department with a big mission. Our vision is of a thriving, globally competitive, low carbon energy economy.  Our key priorities include delivering secure energy on the way to a low carbon future and driving ambitious action on climate change at home and abroad. Within DECC, Strategy Directorate has an exciting and varied portfolio of work: advising ministers and the department on our overall energy and climate change strategy, conducting projects on high priority policy issues and leading the department’s engagement with Whitehall and more widely.   For example, recently the Directorate has run specific projects on Pathways to 2050, Bioenergy, low carbon heat and delivering the cross-government Carbon Plan. Within this Directorate we have a number of Analyst opportunities within our Whitehall offices.
A typical Senior Executive Officer role in Strategy Directorate will involve scoping, managing and delivery of a project work stream as part of a small team, normally by:
  • Developing a rapid understanding and knowledge of a new policy area
  • Gathering, analysing and synthesising evidence to answer policy problems
  • Shaping DECC’s strategy and developing recommendations to ministers
  • Building support for recommendations by managing a network of stakeholders in other departments and outside government
The successful candidates will have excellent analytical and problem solving skills and be able to communicate complex issues clearly and concisely to senior officials and ministers. Many of the problems you will be given will be ill-defined and unclear. Part of your role will be to figure out what the actual problem is, and then persuade others both of the nature of the problem and that you have the right answer.  Post holders will be required to manage their work independently and flexibly, work to tight deadlines and deal with stakeholders sensitively and effectively.
The post is offered on a fixed term basis for two years with the possibility of extension or permanency.
Applicants will be expected to undergo security clearance.
