Department

BBC Media Action is the independent international charity of the BBC. Our mission is to use media to improve the quality of people’s lives in developing and transitional countries. We do this through our focus on health, governance, livelihoods, climate change and humanitarian response. Facilitating this are our strong partnerships that include governments, broadcasters, civil society institutions, donor agencies and international Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs). As Senior Mobile Adviser based in London, you’ll strengthen our work largely through supporting the development of mobile services in our project teams.

Role

You’ll help us to design and deliver effective mobile services to benefit the lives of impoverished people in developing countries. As a result, you’ll largely be assessing feasibility (technical, financial, regulatory) as well as providing guidance, sharing knowledge and working with teams as they run new mobile-driven initiatives. So, you’ll advise and support our project teams in Asia, Africa and the Middle East to develop mobile services, either standalone or integrated with other media outputs. In addition, you’ll research existing and new technologies and show the value of these for social impact. The role is based in London, with travel to country offices required on at least six occasions a year of variable durations.

Requirements

You’ll be somebody who recognises the importance of audiences. Alongside this, you’ll also have the technological knowledge and experience to help design our mobile services so they achieve maximum impact. Therefore, you’ll also bring considerable experience of working in the mobile industry in developing countries in a Value Added Services management role. You’ll partly demonstrate this through your strong experience of working with mobile aggregators and content providers in developing countries to develop technologies including IVR, SMS and USSD. Additionally, you’ll bring a strong history in user-centred product design, including designing and implementing market research to inform future strategy.
