Salary : €66,444 per annum
Amnesty International (AI) has embarked on a two-year project to ensure that victims of crimes under international law in Africa obtain justice, truth and reparations. The project seeks to ensure: (i) the use – in strategic jurisdictions - of key domestic and international criminal justice mechanisms; and (ii) the shoring up in Africa of support and proactive cooperation for international criminal justice mechanisms, including the International Criminal Court.
 
About the role:
The Senior Legal Adviser is a two year funded post and is part of the core project team that leads delivery of the project within the broader AI’s strategic goal and body of work on international justice and accountability. Working under direct supervision of Research and Advocacy Director for Africa and working with the AI’s International Justice team, the Senior Legal Advisor leads on analysis, advocacy and strategic litigation initiatives in Africa. The International Justice Team (IJ Team) leads on AI’s work on international justice matters, focusing on standard-setting, accountability for crimes under international law, strengthening of domestic and international accountability legal frameworks and accountability mechanisms.
 
About you:
You will have obtained a professional qualification to practice law in at least one jurisdiction and substantial experience in the practice of law. You will have substantial knowledge of and experience in the application of international law, including international human rights law, humanitarian law and international criminal law. You will be a leading expert in the field of non-discrimination and gender equality and substantial expertise in ensuring that legal and policy analysis mainstreams gender. You will also have an excellent knowledge of one of the following areas: criminal law and criminal procedure; the principles of parallel, customary, or traditional legal systems; state responsibility, non-state actors, and bases for extraterritorial jurisdiction under international law. You will have extensive experience of managing people, including at a distance; excellent analytical skills; good interpersonal and organisational skills; excellent communication and capacity building skills. You will have experience of planning, organizing and prioritising work under pressure and to deadlines. You will also have excellent external representational skills.
