Counsel, Banking Operations, southern and eastern Mediterranean

This is a defining point in the history of the southern and eastern Mediterranean (SEMED). It’s also a pivotal time for the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). We’re expanding into the region, ensuring the stable economic growth demanded by the people who live here. It’s a unique moment – and you can be part of it.

About the role
The Office of the General Counsel will be at the heart of our work with the SEMED’s emerging markets. As one of its international transactional lawyers, you’ll advise on legal structuring options, and negotiate and help set up our lending and investment operations – which include everything from project finance transactions to private equity investments. In the process, you’ll develop specialist expertise in the laws of the countries we invest in, as well as in-depth knowledge of the specific sectors – like agribusiness, natural resources, energy and telecoms – we’re active across. More than that though, you’ll be closely involved in seeing that all our investments comply with our strict policies on international environmental standards and corporate governance. Ultimately our work makes people’s lives better. You’ll help make sure of it.

About you
Your experience as a lawyer at a top-rated firm will encompass both civil and common law. In particular we’ll be looking for a relevant professional background in either cross-border banking transactions involving the taking of security; or cross-border corporate or capital markets transactions. It’s experience that will be backed by a law degree from a leading university in your own country, plus either a postgraduate qualification or relevant professional experience gained in another country. The proven ability to draft and negotiate accurate, high-quality documents in Russian, Arabic or a language relevant to our regions of operation would be a definite advantage; as would a track record in Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Tunisia or another country in the region. Add cultural sensitivity, strong communication skills and a flair for teamwork and multi-tasking, and you could soon be building on your strong interest in emerging markets work.

About us
Owned by 61 countries, the European Union and the European Investment Bank, the EBRD supports projects whose funding needs cannot be fully met by the market. We have operations in 29 countries from Central Europe to Central Asia and we are currently expanding into the southern and eastern Mediterranean. Our work covers a huge variety of sectors and projects. And while each one of them is unique in the challenges it presents, all share the common goals of encouraging private investment and promoting secure and stable market economies.
