Director of Governance and Compliance Heriot-Watt University

Following the appointment of Ann Marie Dalton as Secretary of the University in January 2011, Heriot Watt University is delighted to invite applicants to lead the newly created directorate of Governance & Compliance Services. This directorate is one of the eight Professional Service directorates which is responsible for delivering excellent professional services to the University and the Schools of the University. The newly appointed Director will be someone with a proven and established understanding of the legal, compliance and regulatory framework in which universities operate.

The newly established Directorate comprises the following:

  • The Secretariat
  • Risk & Audit Management Services
  • Legal Services
  • Archives, Policy and Records Management
  • Health & Safety
  • Procurement Services

The successful candidate will possess strong leadership skills and will have the ability to influence and direct change. Confidently interacting with and providing reliable advice and guidance to colleagues at all levels across the University, whilst developing a corporate approach to the development of policy and procedure, in the areas identified above and with other Directorates, will be central to ensuring the success of this new directorate.

The nature of the work will be wide and varied and will range from advising on internal legal and regulatory matters to requiring bespoke solutions when dealing with complex matters of University operations. A proven track record in the delivery of excellent standards combined with a clear focus on quality is essential.

Ideally the successful candidate will hold a legal qualification, with proven expertise and experience gained in the delivery of in-house legal services perhaps within a higher education or public sector setting. A strong understanding of the legal, compliance and governance frameworks of a Higher Education institution combined with an ambitious vision for the development of the new Directorate is essential. He/She must be keen to manage and motivate this new team.
