Intern, Rafik Hariri Center for the Middle East

The mission of the Atlantic Council is to renew the transatlantic community for 21st century global challenges. The Rafik Hariri Center serves as the Atlantic Council’s focal point for the Arab states from Morocco to Iraq, covering events in the Maghreb, the Gulf, and Southwest Asia. The Center aims to achieve greater convergence within the Atlantic policy-making community on a long-term approach to the Middle East, a critical strategic arena in which U.S. and European policy-makers must work collaboratively to support Arab countries in transition. The Center seeks ways to rise above sectarianism and authoritarianism, with the aim of supporting indigenously-driven economic and political liberalization, sustainable and indigenous conflict resolution, and greater regional and international integration. Within the Hariri Center, interns provide vital contributions to the program's core functions of analysis and public discussion.

The Center conducts research and project activities on a range of geographic regions and academic specialties. Its policy-making contributions include public speeches by senior U.S. and international policy makers; off-the-record briefings, dinners and strategy sessions with senior U.S. and international policy and officials; research and writing for publications, issue briefs; daily news updates; and other associated activities.

The program seeks well-organized, highly reliable, motivated candidates with excellent research and writing skills who thrive in a fast-paced environment and demonstrate initiative. The position is currently non-paid, but candidates gain valuable skills, experience, knowledge, and contacts in the Washington, DC policy community, and will have the opportunity to engage with policy-makers at a time of considerable transition within the region.

Interns for the Rafik Hariri Center provide important research and logistical support to assist these efforts and support program staff. Interns are closely integrated into the structure of the Center, cooperating with all members of the staff, and are expected to engage in their own research and publishing in addition to their cooperative assignments.

Duties are not limited to, but will include:

  • Conduct research to support the activities of the Center.
  • Manage program contacts and knowledge.
  • Draft correspondence and take notes at Council roundtables and strategy sessions for program archives.
  • Handle logistical issues for program events and activities.
  • Help draft policy briefs and other Center publications.
  • Follow current events in one region or country and produce a daily briefing.
  • Develop and maintain contacts for the Center.

Each intern is responsible for completing all tasks stated above and other duties as assigned.
