Environment Policy Assistant

Status: Temporary contract (two months) full time, 35 hours per week

Salary: £26,533, Grade C

Reports to: Head of Policy and Communications

Based: Islington, London, UK

Please note that the successful candidate will be required to take up this post by the beginning of February 2012, at the latest.

The Environment Policy Assistant will support Progressio’s policy work on Environmental issues. This will involve providing additional capacity support for the implementation of Progressio’s advocacy work in relation to environmental issues, with particular reference to water and climate change, including: 1) Undertaking research, analysis, and external networking in support of international policy work on environmental issues with a current focus on sustainable water resource management and climate change, and 2) Supporting campaigns and communications staff in preparing relevant materials for use with Progressio’s public audiences.

Educated to degree level in a relevant discipline, the post holder will have experience of: conducting research-based policy development (preferably on the environment); networking, lobbying and/or campaigning on policy issues; working effectively with national NGOs, community and/or faith-based organisations, or networks, and writing project proposals or reports. They will also have good understanding of international development and related policy issues, particularly those related to the environment (including climate change) and poverty in the developing world; the ability to work/network with civil society organisations and NGO networks engaged in advocacy on relevant environment and development issues; an understanding of bilateral and multilateral institutions such as: UK government ministries and parliament, EU and UN organisations, and excellent analytical skills, including the ability to translate complex (and potentially sensitive) ideas/issues into briefings and presentations for specialist and non-specialist audiences in a clear, concise and persuasive manner.

Excellent written and oral communication skills in English; understanding of gender issues and commitment to mainstreaming gender; strong interpersonal skills, a commitment to team working and an ability to work in close collaboration with colleagues in different countries; IT skills; the ability to prioritise workload and to work to tight deadlines, and commitment to and sympathy with Progressio’s purpose, vision and values and the ability to put them in to practice are also essential.
