Background / General description:
IFC, the private sector arm of the World Bank Group, is the largest multilateral provider of financing for private enterprise in emerging markets. IFC provides loans, equity, structured finance and risk management tools, as well as advisory services to build the private sector in developing countries. The areas of IFC’s chemical investments cover a wide range of projects in (referred to as “Chemicals”):

• Refineries and distribution facilities

• Petrochemicals

• Fertilizers and Agro Chemicals

• Inorganic chemicals

• Specialties The Chemical Specialist will contribute to the strategic planning of IFC’s involvement in these sectors, fully participating in new business development, investment appraisal and portfolio supervision. The industry specialist will play an important role in helping IFC meet client needs, promote positive and sustainable development outcomes and thereby fulfill the Corporation’s broader mandate for poverty reduction through private sector development. The candidate is expected to bring strong technical skills to his/her work, most likely acquired through sufficient industry experience, in order to exercise sound business and commercial judgment.

Duties and Accountabilities:
The successful candidate will:

•Contribute to the formulation and implementation of strategic planning and business development of Chemicals businesses.

•Evaluate existing chemicals companies, new chemical projects, conduct due diligence through desk review and site visits (significant travel is required to meet the job requirements).

•Help supervise the existing investment portfolio.

•Keep abreast of current industry practice and advise IFC industry and regional staff on general industry trends and issues.

•Work collaboratively with the investment teams and division’s chemical specialists.

Selection Criteria:
•Degree in chemical engineering with direct responsibility/exposure to operating companies including experience in commercial aspects, plant operations and project execution in the chemicals industries. Experience in energy/resource optimization and environmental issues a plus. A fair appreciation of economics of each product/operation is highly desirable.

•Broad experience (15-18 years+) in the chemicals industry with regional or international chemicals companies, and progressively increasing responsibilities. Extensive contact network with leading industry players is required.

•Preference for experience in at least two of the subsectors along with willingness to learn other subsectors.

•Qualifications must include computer literacy in relevant scientific/technical software, excellent communication skills both written and verbal in English. Fluency in one or more of other major languages, as well as an experience in/or strong familiarity with developing countries is desirable.

•Headquartered in Washington D.C., with requirement for extensive international travel.For non-US residents a G-4 visa will be issued. Application Instructions:
