ENDS Europe is a digital-only daily news service dealing with all aspects of EU environmental policy including carbon, renewables, waste, pollution, and chemicals.

The service has about 7,000 users in Europe. Typically readers are environmental policymakers, government officials and senior environmental and regulatory affairs managers within multinational organisations – both public and private sector. They generally have a deep knowledge of most EU environment policies. Therefore it is essential to provide an expert service for insiders.

The role

The successful candidate will spend the majority of his/her time writing on and off-diary news stories on a variety of policy developments in Brussels and across Europe.

The writer will quickly get to grips with EU environmental policy if he/she is not already familiar with the subject, and produce with speed and accuracy high quality content that will consolidate ENDS Europe's standing as one of the leading providers of EU environmental news and information.

With the help of the editor and associate editor, the writer will develop specialist knowledge and contacts in a number of areas. He/she will attend events to report on them and represent ENDS Europe when needed.

Additionally, the writer will produce articles for other sections of the website, including interviews and analyses. He/she will also contribute to the publication of special reports and editorial content for external clients.

The position might also involve editing daily news stories and in-depth content written by other members of staff, depending on the experience and seniority of the successful candidate.

Key job requirements

The writer is expected to:

  • Generate story ideas on a daily basis;
  • Write insightful and concise articles for an expert audience;
  • Show a keen interest in reading and analysing lengthy and often very technical reports;
  • Pay attention to detail and show flair for spotting policy changes;
  • Turn jargon and complex issues into easy-to-understand and meaningful content;
  • Ability to build and maintain high-level contacts.

Essential skills/knowledge

  • Strong literacy and numerical skills;
  • Strong communication skills;
  • Language skills (particularly French and/or German);
  • Understanding of the product’s market and audience;
  • Understanding of European environmental policy process;
  • Knowledge of, or familiarity with, all important EU environmental policy areas (carbon, renewables, waste, pollution, chemicals) would be an advantage.
