Environmental Management System Consultant WFP

The World Food Programme (WFP) is the world's largest humanitarian agency, fighting hunger worldwide. We are currently seeking to fill a consultancy position of Environmental Management System Consultant. The position will be based in the organization’s Facilities Management Unit at Headquarters in Rome, Italy for a contract period of 6 months, with a possibility of extension.

WFP is a leader in environmental sustainability in the UN system and, at the request of executive management, is in the early stages of developing an environmental management strategy. The selected candidate will manage the day-to-day progress of WFP’s work in this area and will liaise with a wide range of stakeholders throughout the organization and stay abreast of UN-wide developments.

The selected candidate will be responsible for the following key duties:

- In consultation with the Environmental Sustainability Manager, design and deliver a scoping study for a potential Environmental Management System (EMS) for WFP addressing, at the minimum:

  • o organizational context (summary of historic action and existing policy);
  • o drivers for and barriers to environmental sustainability management;
  • o describe qualitatively the potential costs and savings (economic, environmental and social) that might result from adopting an EMS;
  • o summarise existing internationally recognised EMS frameworks and their strengths and weaknesses, with particular focus on ISO 14001, the UN System’s preferred alternative;
  • o provide a detailed overview of WFP’s significant environmental impacts from both long term and emergency response operations, including, at a minimum: energy use, energy supply and greenhouse gas emissions; water supply and wastewater management impacts; waste generation and waste management impacts (for example from premises and vehicles); non-greenhouse gas emissions to air (for example from vehicles & freight); sustainable procurement and disposal impacts; life cycle and supply chain impacts; biodiversity impacts;
  • o describe data collection and reporting requirements of an EMS;
  • o identify key stakeholders/WFP teams and potential impacts of adopting an EMS on their work processes;
  • o outline key steps for implementation of an EMS, including milestones requiring executive approval and likely time, budget and staff requirements;
  • o prepare briefing documents and presentations for WFP senior management regarding EMS implementation.

- With the Environmental Sustainability manager , represent WFP at inter-agency discussions about the development of a common EMS framework for the entire UN system and integrate outcomes from these meetings into WFP’s proposed approach;

- Provide sustainability management advice to the HQ Operations and Field Engineering teams on request, including the development of awareness raising materials and inputs to the Greening WFP intranet site, as required.

Qualifications & Experience Required

Education:

  • University degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability Management or other related fields;
  • Professional competency-based accreditation as an Environmental Auditor or Practitioner, from an international or national body such as IEMA (UK/EU), CECAB (Canada) or EIANZ (Australia and New Zealand) is highly desirable.
  • Experience & Technical Skills/Knowledge:
  • At least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in environmental sustainability management roles such as environmental consultancy, environmental impact assessment;
  • Previous experience of designing and/or implementing an EMS, and demonstrated experience in at least three of the following environmental aspects and impacts: energy and climate change, air pollution, water management, waste management, sustainable procurement;
  • Prior international experience and experience of ISO 14001 is an asset.
  • Knowledge of preparing corporate social responsibility report and environmental footprint/report;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Competencies:

  • WFP’s core competencies for professionals include action management, communication skills, teamwork and high standards of ethics and values.

Language:

  • Working knowledge (proficiency/level C) of English;
  • Intermediate knowledge of another UN official language (Arabic, French, Spanish, Russian or Chinese) or Portuguese as a WFP working language is preferred.

WFP offers a competitive compensation package which will be determined by the contract type and selected candidate’s qualifications and experience.
