BBSRC provides support for bioscience research and training through grants awarded to universities and research institutes. BBSRC has a scientific strategy that identifies research priorities, emerging areas of new science, and novel tools and technologies in order to ensure that the investments it makes supports the UK science base and delivers economic and societal impacts. Within the Innovation and Skills Group, the Skills and Careers Unit is responsible for the development and implementation of strategy for bioscience careers, research training and skills.
This is a new role within the Skills and Careers Unit, arising from a recent review and restructure of roles and responsibilities within the Unit. The main function of the post is to provide scientific secretariat, strategy and policy support to our Bioscience Skills and Careers Strategy Advisory Panel, an external group which provides independent advice to BBSRC on high-level skills provision within the life sciences. It is anticipated that the post will take responsibility for delivering strategic activities identified within the annual BSC workplan and work with other members of the unit and colleagues across BBSRC on a variety of projects relating to bioscience skills and careers.
Other duties will depend on the skills and experience of the post-holder and are likely to include:
  • Managing the annual Policy Placements competition.
  • Working with the Senior Innovation and Skills Manager in implementing BBSRC's Doctoral Training Partnerships programme.
  • Providing strategy and policy support to the Head of Skills and Careers, particularly in relation to equality and diversity in research careers.
  • Providing input to advice requested from the research community and others; contributing to group, BBSRC or RCUK-wide projects; and representing BBSRC at meetings, workshops and in discussions with external agencies.
With a degree in a biological or related subject and/or previous relevant experience, you will have an aptitude for strategic and administrative planning and be able to analyse and present complex information. As a member of a busy team, you will have good inter-personal, communication and organisation skills and an ability to prioritise tasks and work under pressure to tight deadlines.
