Fleet Supervisor - MRC/UVRI Uganda Research Unit on AIDS

The MRC/UVRI Uganda Research Unit on AIDS was established following a request in 1988 from the Uganda Government to the British Government for collaboration on the research of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infection and AIDS. The Unit is a centre of excellence in HIV/AIDS related research.. The Unit operates a fleet of close to 100 vehicles and motorcycles for its’ field activities and other transport needs. The Unit’s head office is at Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) in Entebbe with field stations in Kampala, Masaka, and Kalungu districts. The Unit invites applications from suitably qualified Ugandans to fill the position of:
Fleet Supervisor
Job purpose: To provide an efficient, secure and professional fleet management service to meet the requirements of the Unit and the MRC UK, by acting as a Fleet Supervisor overseeing the extensive fleet of cars and motorbikes. To ensure the reliable, clean, safe and efficient transport services for all Unit official requirements and to provide fleet operational related information and advice/support to Directors, Unit administrator, Project leaders and Employees. To work towards prevention of misuse of vehicles and fuel fraud across the Unit’s operations.
Roles & Responsibilities
  • Up keep of Unit Vehicles, ensuring vehicles are in a safe condition at all times and that they are fully equipped with up-to-date safety gear including first aid kits and emergency information.
  • Manage activities related to allocation, routing, dispatching and tracking Unit vehicles and motorcycles.
  • Ensuring all vehicles are correctly insured.
  • Preventing any unauthorised or unofficial usage of fleet vehicles and that vehicles and motorbikes are parked up on site as far as possible at the end of every day.
  • Administration of the Fleet Management System.
  • Preparing budgets and advising on maintenance requirements for vehicles and motorcycles.
  • Scheduling of routine maintenance for vehicles.

Requirement:

  • A good first degree from a reputable institution is essential.
  • Basic knowledge of automotive mechanics at least to understand the nature of problems, if not, to be able to fix them.
  • Very good Microsoft office skills especially excel.
  • Excellent administrative, organisational and communication skills and meticulous attention to detail and record keeping.
  • 3 years' significant staff management responsibility within a relevant busy logistical related environment i.e. a fleet/transport/freight or distribution company.

Successful applicants will serve a 2 year contract with a possibility of renewal inclusive of a 6 months’ probation.
Other terms and conditions for the post are specified in the MRC staff code. A good salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered to the successful candidate.
Location: The position will be based in Entebbe with occasional travel to Kampala, Kyamulibwa & Masaka Field Stations.
