Summary:
Van Andel Research Institute’s Laboratory for Translational Parkinson’s Disease Research (TransPark) has a position available for one Postdoctoral Fellow.
TransPark is focused on pathogenetic mechanisms and pharmacological treatment in cell and animal models of Parkinson's disease. They also study cell replacement therapy with stem cells in attempts to repair brains in animal models of parkinsonism. The group's mission is to understand neurodegenerative diseases and develop new therapies that are of benefit to patients and their caregivers.
The successful candidate will have access to state-of-the-art facilities and will be assisted part-time by a research technician. This project will be carried out in collaboration with a biotech company and has the potential to lead to clinical trials.
This postdoctoral position is available immediately for a motivated Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. in neuroscience, biochemistry, and/or molecular and cell biology. The postdoctoral fellow will investigate the neuroprotective role of a novel compound in a rodent model of L-dopa induced dyskinesia.
Functions:
Van Andel Research Institute (VARI) provides postdoctoral training opportunities to scientists beginning their research careers. The fellowships are to help promising scientists advance their knowledge and research experience and at the same time support the research endeavors of VARI under the mentorship of a VARI Faculty member. Postdoctoral fellows are appointed for a limited period of time, usually three years but no more than five years.
While this project is currently funded, an integral part of postdoctoral training is the process of preparing a research proposal and writing a fellowship application. All VARI Postdoctoral Fellows are encouraged to apply for external funding as soon as it is practical and reasonable after hire. Receiving a fellowship award provides recognition for both the fellow and VARI.
A successful candidate is a motivated and enthusiastic scientist who enjoys working in a fast-paced collaborative laboratory environment. He or she must be able to prioritize and exhibit exceptional research productivity as well as supervisory and leadership skills. For this position, we value prior postdoctoral experience.
Qualifications:
Ø A Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. in neuroscience, biochemistry, and/or molecular and cell biology with expertise in Parkinson’s disease.
Ø Experience with mouse and rat models of neurological disease and knowledge of brain morphology are expected.
Ø Previous experience with molecular and cell biology techniques, stereotaxic surgery, and rat behavioral studies are also expected.
Ø A strong record of high-impact peer-reviewed publications is highly desirable.
Ø Examples of supervisory and leadership experience requested.
Ø Successful recruitment visit and seminar presentation and at least three (3) letters of recommendation. (In the case of candidates located outside of North America, the requirement for a seminar may be waived.)
Position Status: Full-time, non-exempt
Salary Range: Salary determined based on Doctorate/MD receipt date according to a set stipend schedule, which begins at $40,000 up to a maximum of $48,000.
