The Laboratory Animal Research Center (LARC) of Qatar University is the first state-of-art animal facility at Qatar. LARC is committed to provide quality animal husbandry and veterinary care to support the leading role of the University in education, and research. LARC is devoted to advise, educate and train researchers, staff and students on animal experimentation matters and to promote and assure humane care and use of animals through compliance with International and University policies for the humane care and use of animals. LARC provides support and services to the biomedical research activities including rodents and transgenic animal models.
Position Summary:
The Laboratory Animal Unit has an opening position for a Unit Manager. The qualified applicant must have a minimum of three years' experience in similar job and a master degree in animal or biological sciences, or closely related areas.

Duties and responsibilities:
Laboratory Animal Unit manager is responsible for the day-to-day supervision and overall management of laboratory animal care personnel and the animal facility. The duties include:
  • Procurement of animals;
  • Procurement of animal food and bedding;
  • Supervision of animal laboratory technicians;
  • Managing animal unit environment and conduct environmental monitoring;
  • Coordinating with the veterinary;
  • Quarantine procedures;
  • Maintaining supply stocks;
  • Implementing and evaluating new Protocols;
  • Maintaining facility records in computer data base;
  • Provide guidance to trained personnel and to offer training and counsel to staff in training;
  • Writing & updating Standard Operating Procedures.
Competencies:
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, verbal and written communication skills;
    Strong demonstrated problem-identification and resolution skills;
  • Ability to conduct investigative, quantitative, and qualitative analysis ;
  • Effective time management and organizational skills.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum, Master degree of animal or biological sciences, or related fields;
  • At least 3 years' of experience of animal facility activities and research, rules, practices, and procedures;
  • AALAS certification or equivalent is required or must be obtained within 12 months of eligibility;
  • Experience/training in infectious diseases and infection agents in animal models;
  • Knowledge of computer operation and software (spreadsheets, word processors, presentations, databases, web design, etc.);
  • Ability to multi-task, exhibit excellent customer service, leadership, and apply for grants.
