Main purpose of job

Responsible for specifying and obtaining data from geological investigations as appropriate.

Position in organisation

Direct report to Head of Site Characterisation with no direct reports.       
Close liaison and interaction with Environmental Surveys Manager.  
External liaison with specialist suppliers to provide information needed to undertake geoscientific work in support of the Government's siting programme for a geological disposal facility.
Other external contacts include the Geological Society, British Geological Survey, expert advisory panels, international sister organisations.

Geoscientific inputs to site identification and selection processes.

Dimensions and limits of authority

No specific financial authorities are delegated to this post holder, as the funds to deliver contract  work are managed through appointed project managers.

Qualifications, skills and experience

  • Good first degree in earth science or relevant engineering subject.
  • Chartered membership status (or working towards it) in relevant professional institute.
  • Significant experience and knowledge of the range of data acquisition and interpretation techniques available to characterise the geoscientific aspects of sites.
  • Knowledge of the principles of data and records management.

Duties and key responsibilities

Development of needs-driven plans for surface-based and underground investigations
Maintain and develop the understanding of approaches to the design and implementation of needs-driven investigations (surface-based and underground investigations, etc) and input this knowledge and understanding into discussions with key stakeholders, as necessary.
Undertake sufficient preparatory work such that, when required, there is a fully justified needs-driven plan for site geological investigations.
This work complements the work of the Environmental Surveys Manager.  The post-holder is concerned with characterisation of sites "below ground" and the Environmental Surveys Manager characterises sites "above ground".  
Geoscientific inputs to site identification and selection processes
Responsible for preparing geological inputs to site evaluations, preliminary assessments and initial site evaluations for potential repository sites.

  • In addition, he/she will undertake other activities commensurate with their skills and experience as and when required
  • Staff will be expected to support and implement corporate decisions and initiatives as instructed by their Line Manager.
