Department

The Executive Unit deals with the significant volume of business correspondence of the Director-General and (where appropriate) the Deputy Director-General, co-ordinating where necessary with the Trust Unit, with BBC management and programme-makers, and those responsible for editorial standards and complaints handling throughout the organisation.

The Correspondence Unit also consults on internal correspondence received by the Director-General and may in due course take responsibility for the management of staff contacts.

Role

The Correspondence Advisor plays a key part in the communications of the Executive Unit, including high level drafting on behalf of Director General and, as appropriate, the Deputy Director General.

You will also support the Head of the Unit and the Head of the Director General’s Office on communications and correspondence-related projects.

Main responsibilities will include drafting, editing and quality control of drafts prepared for the DG’s signature, with some drafting of many of the more complex and sensitive replies; reviewing correspondence and using personal judgement to decide what action should be taken to deal with replies; using critical evaluation to establish best response and where necessary and challenging input offered from elsewhere.

There will be a large degree of internal consultation and liaison with senior colleagues across the BBC on issues raised by correspondents, drawing on knowledge of business taken at corporate meetings to ensure replies are dealt with sensitively and efficiently.

The administration of the correspondence is critical; this will include logging, acknowledgments, ensuring those requesting responses are dealt with appropriately and sensitively

Requirements

Educated to degree level or equivalent, you will bring excellent verbal communication and written skills, supported by a great attention to detail and a diplomatic attitude.

Your understanding of the complexities of a public broadcaster will mean that you bring a confident attitude that what you say in your correspondence with people at all levels internally and the public, is accurate, appropriate and supported by fact.

Following procedure in terms of repsonses is critical, so your desire to adhere to due process within a timely manner will see you succeed here.
